Riz Ortolani - Cannibal Holocaust

Riz Ortolani's music from Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust. The famous image of the woman impaled on a post like some kind of human kebob remains one of the most frightening and disturbing images in all of cinema in my opinion. They did a bang-up job on that effect. It was so realistic Ruggero had to go to court and prove it was not an actual corpse. They apparently just had her sit on a bicycle seat with a piece of wood resting in her mouth. While the humans in the movie made it out with a pulse, the animals killed onscreen were really killed. I know, animals are killed and eaten all the time, and I read that the "cannibals" in the film ate the animals they killed. But still, watching it happen will depress the hell out of you. That poor turtle. I know they kille other animals too, but that one sticks out the most.

It can be hard to watch at times, what with the rape, cannibalism, animal slaughter, and all around gruesome mayhem and negative tone, but dammit all, it's a great film. If you haven't seen it and have the stomach for it I highly recommend giving it a look. Might want to rent it prior to purchasing, you will feel a touch nauseous and depressed afterwards.

It is an incredibly hard to watch film (the poor animals), but strangely the music is really beautiful. I like the opening theme and the 'Crucified Woman' piece that runs over the lady on the pole. I found Rix Ortolani's other scores to be similar, such as the lyrical music running throughout the inflammatory Goodbye, Uncle Tom, Mondo Cane and Africa Addio!
