You Will Be.....Rockula!

By popular demand here is the 1990 Luca "I Directed Ghoulies" Bercovici film Rockula, starring one Dean Cameron. The plot, as it were, from the IMDB:

"Rockula is about a male vampire who lost his lady love centuries ago. She was killed by a pirate with a rhinestone peg leg, wielding a large ham bone. Our hero, the vampire, did nothing to save her. So he is now cursed to watch her be born again in another life, and then watch her die, strangely enough by a pirate with a rhinestone peg leg, wielding you-know-what. Now, in 1990, he has, he suspects, his last chance to try to save her instead of watching get clubbed over and over again down through the years. Oh, and he becomes a rock star in the process." The film also stars Bo Diddley, a pre-bald Thomas Dolby and Toni Basil.

Things to look out for:

  • Delightful Fred S. Kuentz animated title sequence
  • Toni's jawdroppingly bizarre song and dance about an hour into the movie.
  • A ham-bone wielding Pirate
  • Multiple Dean on Dean arguments
  • Toni in Indiana Jones hat
  • A vampire at his piano
  • Rick Zumwalt motorboats Toni Basil
  • Bo Diddley's Gold 45 Belt Buckle
  • Toni getting sloshed in a bubble bath (really, she kinda steals the show here)
  • Cheesy Romantic rock video complete with couple kissing in the rain.

Okay, there was actually only one request for this, but he was pretty enthusiastic about it so I'm still counting it as popular demand. I personally hadn't even heard of this movie until earlier this year when fellow crap enthusiast Vinnie at Vinnie's Rare Records posted the soundtrack. I was a bit ashamed really as I pride myself on my decent knowledge of obscure cinema, so to not even have heard of something like Rockula was a bit of an embarrassment. I immediately went on a massive hunt on every torrent site I could find to track this bizarre little movie down, but I came up empty. A few weeks later I put in a request over at Cinemaggedon and a day or two later Rockula appeared. Now thanks to the original ripper dozens of my visitors will be able to check out the semi-long lost musical comedy. (Don't worry, it's not a "musical" style musical.) I won't go into too much detail regarding the film or it's troubled release history because Vinnie has a rather thorough recount written up on his site.

The file is a little over 800 MB, and it's split over 5 parts on Rapidshare.

Random fact: Legendary cartoon voice actor John Stephenson did a character called Rockula in a Flintstones TV movie called The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone back in 1979. He also did Mr. Slate on the Flintstones, plus a couple hundred other voices throughout his career.

Interesting about the voice of Mr. Slate/Stephenson. I literally just got done writing a post on notable voice actors (on my blog, retrospace).

Anyway, mighty fine work as usual. I'm still enjoying The Van soundtrack you posted a while back... can't get enough "Early Morning Love".

And to think... I actually paid money for the film on ebay lol.

My thoughts are lurking over at my blog but summed up with "a deeply warped part of me enjoyed the flick. It was something a little different within the genre, and it reminded me of days gone by – and perhaps warmed me by reminding me that they have, most definitely, gone by."

Thanks for sharing this movie. I've been wanting to watch it since getting the ripped soundtrack. I love both the film and songs. Very funny movie. It needs a DVD release.

Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to replace my long gone VHS for years ! This is one of my absolute cult movies. I still hope some day I'll be able to find the soundtrack in 320, that would be awsome.

You really made my day, thank you :-)

"great/lame/retarded/funny/awesome" is about as good a compliment as one could hope for, right?
