Robot Fisticuffs - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

Here's my latest compilation, I call it Robot Fisticuffs. The theme for this one is "bands who share a name with a movie". Not every band here was actually directly influenced by the movie which they share a name with (some of the movies even came out after the band was created). Some of these just happen to be coincidental.

The cover comes from the May 1969 issue of Magnus Robot Fighter, 4000 A.D. I realize I'm coming off as kind of a one trick pony with my "old comic art, wacky title that has little to do with anything" cover designing formula, but until I actually attend any kind of design class, I'm having fun with the formula. Besides, it's just a little compilation that I had fun, uh, compiling, so I don't think anyone out there will be too worried. I've got a whole stack of old comics from when I helped a friends parents clean out their basement, so there are plenty more wacky covered compilations to come.

Here is the tracklist. For any films I thought might be lesser known, I've linked to their IMDB pages.

Black Sabbath - Killing Yourself to Live
Motorpsycho - No Evil
Rush - Mystic Rhythms
White Zombie - Feed The Gods
Misfits - Blood Feast
Heaven's Gate - Surrender
All About Eve - Flowers In Our Hair
My Bloody Valentine - Off Your Face
Real Life - Exploding Bullets
Element of Crime - Und du Wartest
BMX Bandits - Just Remember I'm a Woman
Say Anything - Chia-Like I Will Grow
Blondie - Union City Blue
Gore Gore Girls - I'm Gonna Get You Yet
Evil Dead - Living Good
The Gathering - Souvenirs
Fantomas - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Devil Doll - Dies Irae Part 3,4, and 5

A few more that were considered, but ultimately dropped:
Quo Vadis - A badass Canadian Death Metal band - check them out at once!
Killdozer
They Might Be Giants
Warlock
Babes in Toyland
Phantom Planet
Soilent Green
Huh, that's more than I remembered dropping. Almost enough for another one...I think I smell a sequel...

Le Spie vengono dal semifreddo (Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs)

Here is Les Baxter's music from Le Spie vengono dal semifreddo aka Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs, the follow up to 1965's Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. Girl Bombs was actually directed by Mario Bava, and featured Vincent Price reprising his General Willis / Dr. Goldfoot character.

This one is up there on the 'movies with a high amount of alternate titles' list. For example:
Bonecas Explosivas Brazil
Clan dei due mafiosi, Il Italy (reissue title)
Dr. Goldfoot and the 'S' Bomb UK
Dr. Goldfoot and the 'S' Bombs (undefined)
Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs USA
Dr. Goldfoot and the Love Bomb (undefined)
Dr. Goldfoot and the Sex Bombs (undefined)
Due mafiosi dell'F.B.I., I Italy
Due mafiso dell'F.B.I, I Italy (working title)
Espion qui venait du surgelé, L' France
Espion qui venait du surgele, L' France (TV title)
Spies Come from Half-Cold (undefined)
The Spy Came from the Semi-Cold International (literal title) (English title)
Two Mafia Guys from the FBI International (literal title) (English title)

Personally, I think they should've used that part of the tagline for the title, call it Dr. Goldfoot and the Girls With The Thermo-Nuclear Navels. At the very least it seems like a shitty all girl surf band should consider calling themselves The Girls With The Thermo-Nuclear Navels.

1. The Sloopys - Dr. Goldfoot & The Girl Bombs (02:07)
2. Mad Doctors - Dr. Goldfoot's Igloo (01:49)
3. Terry Stafford - Try My World Little Girl (02:27)
4. Mad Doctors - The Mad Mad Doctor (02:08)
5. Bobby Lile - They Just Don't Make 'Em Like Her Anymore (02:14)
6. Paul & The Pack - Hidin' From Myself (02:02)
7. Mad Doctors - The Golden Bomb (02:23)
8. The Candles - This I Say (02:24)
9. Mad Doctors - The Golden Price (01:48)
10. Mad Doctors - Dr. Goldfoot & The Girl Bombs (02:21)

Deep Red Gothic

Here are a couple of highly sought after reups. First up, Thomas Dolby - Gothic. Followed by Goblin - Profondo Rosso. Grab those now...before it's too late!

Odd timing actually, as Natasha Richardson, who starred in Gothic passed away earlier today after a skiing accident. It's tragic to have lost her at the young age of 45. My thoughts are with her husband Liam and their 2 children.

Combustible Edison - Four Rooms

This is the music from the 1995 anthology film Four Rooms. Four different writers/directors each worked on their own segment of the film. The writers and directors of the segments:

Allison Anders (segment "The Missing Ingredient")
Alexandre Rockwell (segment "The Wrong Man")
Robert Rodriguez (segment "The Misbehavers")
Quentin Tarantino (segment "The Man from Hollywood")

This is a rare comedic Tim Roth role, which is kind of a shame because he's quite hilarious here. The film itself is uneven (to be expected with any anthology), but Tim remains entertaining throughout. One problem I have with Four Rooms, it commits one of the worst anthology film sins, putting the least interesting (although nudity filled) segment at the very beginning of the movie. If your audience isn't patient you're most likely going to lose them right away.

The music is credited to a group who called themselves Combustible Edison. The last thing they released was way back in 1998, so I'd have to assume they have stopped making music as Combustible Edison.

Say Anything...

Sorry about the few days without a post, I had to work a few days, and yesterday was dedicated to my first Morrissey concert going experience. He's a pretty hard dude to see live actually, being notorious for canceling his shows with little warning. In fact, out of the last 8 shows he was set to perform, he only went through with 2 of them due to illness. Luckily he was feeling up for it yesterday and put on a great show. The band sounded amazing (they have a much heavier sound when they play live), and Morrissey was charismatic, and occasionally a bit insulting to the audience, just as you'd expect. And, if you're wondering, he's still throwing his shirts into the audience even though he's pushing 50.

Unfortunately the show was in a terrible area. I have no idea why they insist on building these nice, expensive wine-serving theaters and performing art centers in the most terrifying of neighborhoods.

Today's post is the soundtrack from Say Anything, a film popular enough to have a band named after it. Actually, look for a song by that band on my as of yet untitled "Bands That Share a Name With a Movie" compilation. I think Say Anything might be Cusack's most popular 80's film (at least where he was the lead) and while I'm way more partial to The Sure Thing or Better Off Dead I can certainly understand Say Anything's appeal. And I can only imagine the amount of boombox-over-the-head Peter Gabriel serenades that followed in this movie's wake.

1 Nancy Wilson - All for Love 4:37
2 Living Colour - Cult of Personality 5:07
3 Joe Satriani - One Big Rush 3:25
4 Cheap Trick - You Want It 3:43
5 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Taste the Pain 5:04
6 Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes 5:23
7 Depeche Mode - Stripped (Live) 6:41
8 Fishbone - Skankin' to the Beat 2:49
9 The Replacements - Within Your Reach 4:26
10 Freiheit - Keeping the Dream Alive 4:14
11 Lloyd Dobler Rap 0:33

If someone can explain Fishbone to me, and their appeal, I'd really appreciate it.

Kickboxing. Sport of the future.

Meet The Applegates

This is Meet The Applegates. The 1991 Michael Lehmann film, starring Ed Begley Jr., Stockard Channing, and Dabney Coleman. The Applegates was even scored by our very own David Newman.

The setup:
"In the South American jungle a species of giant cocorada insects find a Dick and Jane book dropped by fleeing teachers. Not long after, a group of cocoradas, camouflaging themselves as an ordinary human family, set up house in a suburban neighbourhood with the intention of sabotaging a nuclear power plant and bringing down civilization so that they can have the planet to themselves. However the temptations of Western civilization prove to be too much for them – the father has an affair with his secretary, the mother becomes addicted to credit card shopping, the daughter becomes a militant feminist and the son a stoner."

This was Lehmann's followup to Heathers. While not nearly as popular, or as memorable as Heathers, Applegates is still quite an entertaining film, and its current "Out of Print in any format, anywhere in the world" status is a bit baffling.

The file is about 700 MB, split over 4 parts which can be found here . I can't even remember where I got this from, but as always, credit to the original ripper/uploader.

Things to watch for:

Otho on Safari
Motorhead Metal Twins
Formicophiliac Father Figure
John Escobar as Jorge, Aunt Bea's Sacrifice

Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By

Upon hearing the news that Faith No More was planning on reuniting I found a list of some of Mike Patton's other projects. I was familiar with most of it - Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom and Mike's solo stuff, but one I had never heard of was something called Lovage - a collaborative effort between Dan Nakamura, Mike Patton, Jennifer Charles and Kid Koala.

Mike Patton has an absolutely incredible voice, but I much prefer to hear the man sing instead of doing his more deranged solo/Fantomas stuff. I totally respect the man as an artist and everything, but I just can not get into this type of stuff. Luckily Lovage is a very cool, laid back trip-hop/lounge outfit which lets Mike's (and Jennifer's) tremendous singing voice shine. If you like your Mike Patton a little poppier (like Peeping Tom) I would give this a shot.

This album is quite out of print and is fetching upwards of $100 on Amazon, so I am posting this here for anyone having trouble finding it. Or people like myself who somehow never heard of it before now.

1 Ladies Love Chest Rockwell (feat. Prince Paul) 1:19

Walter Werzowa - Hellraiser: Inferno

And thanks to JC Harris once again here is the score from Hellraiser Inferno. I listed this as my least favorite Hellraiser in the last post, but I honestly don't remember too much about it. I just know I didn't like it when I saw it. Of course, I haven't really seen any of the Hellraiser movies in at least a year and a half (8 years for Inferno) so I probably need to see them all again to get a more up to date opinion on the series.

It may not be obvious from looking at the two, but Kid in the Hall Bruce McCulloch has the ability to look quite similar to Inferno star Craig Sheffer. But shorter. And Canadian-er.

Stephen Edwards - Hellraiser: Hellseeker

This is Stephen Edward's music from the 6th enry in the Hellraiser series, 2002's Hellseeker. You know what, I actually really enjoyed Hellseeker. I think if I had to put them in order of preference, I'd say
  1. Hellbound
  2. Hellraiser
  3. Hellseeker
  4. Hell On Earth
  5. Hellworld
  6. Bloodline
  7. Inferno
I've left Deader off because that's the one that I haven't gotten around to seeing yet.

Edwards isn't a composer that's really too well known, although he has worked on around 80 films - mostly low-budget action sequels like Project Shadowchaser II and Bloodsport II and III. The last movie he worked on that's been released (he has 4 projects in the works) was Feast III, which apart from one hilarious Rambo III bit has to be one of the worst things I've ever seen. An absolute mess of a film in every possible way; killing off the wrong characters at the wrong time, monster rape, 5 minute long fight scene lit with a strobe-light, more monster rape, a ninja, and a Transformer...I love current Vice President Clu Gulager to death, but his son has got to get his shit together before he directs another movie. Monster rape is NOT FUNNY, no matter how many times you see it.

Sorry to go on a rant there. Feast III has nothing to do with anything, but I had nothing more important to say about Hellseeker and had to get that out there. This seemed like the place. I haven't hated a sequel to a movie I actually liked so much since last year's Return To Sleepaway Camp.

Moving on. Credit for this goes out to JC Harris who was kind enough to upload and post links to this, and a few other things that'll be posted here soon. here is your tracklist:
01. Main Title
02. Brian Surgery
03. Detective at Hospital
