Death Metal Fanny Pack

As none of you most likely know, in my spare time I'm occasionally an unsuccessful inventor. I'm the Homer Simpson variety inventor, for every halfway decent idea I've come up with there are a hundred that are really, really crappy. But I think I'm onto something here. Not since Clip-On 3-D Glasses (making 3-D movies easier on those who wear glasses, of course) have I come up with something this ingenious. The Death Metal Fanny Pack - For The Indiscriminate Metal Fan On The Go:

Nergal from Behemoth thinks they're cool! (Nergal? Wasn't that Garfield's arch nemesis in the hit comic strip Garfield?)

Weird Science

I think Weird Science would be my favorite of the John Hughes-directed films of the 1980's. Although Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck are quite spectacular as well. I wouldn't say Weird Science was the "best" of the bunch, but it's still my favorite. I've found that a lot of the movies that I ended up revisiting the most feature a couple of nerdy/misfit/outcast friends/brothers in some kind of wacky misadventures. Put Strange Brew, Wayne's World or Bill and Ted, Lebowski (it counts) on in front of me and I will stop anything I'm doing and stay put until the credits roll. (Once I can own it and watch it on a regular basis, the critically maligned Pineapple Express will be added to that list as well.)

In addition to Weird Science being loaded with nerdiriffic shenaningans, there is also some great and hilarious dialog between Garry, Wyatt and their digitally-created Frankenbroad Lisa. I've also always felt there were some great casting choices in Weird Science; Anthony Michael Hall, Robert Downey Jr., Bill Paxton, Michael Berryman and that chick from Night of the Creeps, Return of the Living Dead II and Killer Klowns From Outer Space - that's good casting if I ever saw it.

Anyway, I've said enough for one post, but while I'm talking Hughes, I just need to state, for the record, that it is my opinion that The Breakfast Club has by far the worst out-of-nowhere dance scene in the history of time and space. I cringed so hard the first time I saw that scene that my face has still not fully recovered. It's caused some problems for me over the years. Oh, and Ally Sheedy was much hotter before they Ringwalded her up at the end. Thank you for listening, I had to get that off my chest.

You're stewed, buttwad!

Silent

I think I've just discovered the oddest trailer of 2008. From the director of Trees and Trees 2: The Root of All Evil, comes Silent, a film in which a girl in a silent movie suddenly develops an actual speaking voice. It's a very interesting concept, and if done right this thing could be pretty amazing. I'm anxious to see what they've done with it.

Goodbye Isaac and Bernie

This has been a tough year on celebrities, and over the past couple of days we've lost a couple of great people. Academy and Grammy Award winning musician Isaac Hayes has died at the age of 65 and a day before he passed away, Comedian Bernie Mac died at the age of 50. Both of these deaths pretty much came out of nowhere and I'm tremendously saddened by the loss of both of them.

Read more about Bernie here and Isaac here

As a tribute to Isaac and Bernie, I recommend everyone sit down and take in a double feature of Truck Turner and Bad Santa.

Tuesday Knight - Tuesday Knight

Jason over at NightChillers has just posted Elm Street 4 star Tuesday Knight's 1987 self-titled solo album. It's pretty obscure (I've searched for it for years) and I'm sure some of you will want to check out so I'm mentioning it here so none of you miss it. He ripped it from a cassette copy, but the tape was brand new when he ripped it, so the sound quality is very good.

Of course, don't download it expecting some lost classic, it's just a pretty decent late 80's pop/rock album. I will say that I think track #3, The Harder You Love is a fantastic song though. He even included her song Nightmare, which plays over the Nightmare 4 opening credits, a song that does not appear on her album. Check it out here, and be sure to thank Jason for his hard work. And if you're still hankering for some Dream Master sounds after listening to Nightmare, I have the soundtrack and score right here.

While I'm here, I'd just like to say that I hate when an artist or band releases a self-titled album. Sure that has no effect on the album, and I'll certainly still buy an album I like if it shares a name with the band that created it. I'm just saying it seems like a cop out because no one in the band could think of anything cool to call the album. Who's with me?

Site Undergoing Some Changes...Fear Not!

Just a quick post to let you guys know I'm trying to fix up the template a bit, so if you notice a massively off center banner or anything like that, try to ignore it.
