Synapse Licenses Suspiria For 2014-15 Blu-Ray Release

"SYNAPSE FILMS, INC. LICENSES “SUSPIRIA”, ONE OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIME, FOR DVD, BLU-RAY AND FUTURE OPTICAL MEDIA.

ROMULUS, MI – Synapse Films, Inc. has acquired the North American home-video rights to the 1977 classic horror film SUSPIRIA, directed by Italian horror master Dario Argento. Described as “one of the scariest films of all time” by Entertainment Weekly, SUSPIRIA stars the beautiful Jessica Harper as a young girl caught up in a coven of witches controlling a German dance academy.

“I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but SUSPIRIA has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing project for us.”

Synapse Films, Inc. will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release. “It’s important to spend as much time as possible to create the definitive high-definition home video version for the fans,” May explains. “We’re going to take our time with this one.”

Synapse Films, Inc. is currently planning the extensive work on SUSPIRIA in conjunction with Technicolor, utilizing both their Rome and Hollywood facilities. The film scanning will be coordinated and supervised by Technicolor Hollywood’s Director of Restoration Services, Tom Burton, whose film restoration credits include Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER, Georges Méliès’ A TRIP TO THE MOON and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S.

Final specifications, retail pricing, and extras for the Synapse Films release of SUSPIRIA will be announced closer to the as yet to be determined release date."

Fantastic news of course, but fingers crossed they don't pull a Demons on us and only put out a $45 steelbook version. I know Suspiria is a much bigger film, and a limited edition is highly unlikely, I'm just still a little bitter about the non-poor people friendly release of Demons (which was possibly my most anticipated release of the year until I found out it was nearly $50).

Sleepaway Camp From Scream Factory in 2014!

Just posted on their Facebook page:

Happy Halloween everyone! We are super excited to announce to you on this special day that we will be releasing the original uncut SLEEPAWAY CAMP film on Blu-ray for the first time next Spring!

This will most definitely be a Collector's Edition (new art is being worked on it as we type) and is planned to come loaded with great extras that will be announced at a later date. We love this film and will certainly aim to please fans of Angela, Aunt Martha, cussing cousin Ricky, Judy, Meg and the rest of Camp Arawak's memorable counselors and campers.

No cover art yet, but enjoy this random Sleepaway Camp poster:

Hopefully we'll eventually get a Blu-ray double feature of Sleepaway Camp II and III as well. Sure, many will argue that Part II and III suck, and yes, they technically suck, but they suck in the most amazing way possible.

Just Before Dawn and Voices From Beyond - Code Red Blu-rays Preorder Now

Code Red's first ventures into Blu-ray have just gone up for preorder on the Big Cartel site; Jeff Lieberman's Just Before Dawn and Lucio Fulci's Voices From Beyond. Both titles are limited - Voices is only 1,000 copies and the number isn't mentioned for Dawn, but I think he said 2,000 or 3,000 on one of the forums he posts on. I'm not sure how well Voices will sell, but I predict Just Before Dawn will sell very well, so I'm going to put in an order for that one now.

JUST BEFORE DAWN - $26.99

LIMIT TWO PER CUSTOMER
Five friends set out for a weekend camping excursion, to drink, frolic and skinny-dip on an isolated piece of land one of them has inherited. Despite ominous warnings from local forest ranger (GEORGE KENNEDY, AIRPORT, DEATHSHIP), strange backwoods families, and a hollering drunken hunter (Mike Kellin, SLEEPAWAY CAMP) claiming to have witnessed his friend’s evisceration by the hands of "Demons", they trek further into the foliage. Beautifully shot, extremely eerie, and with a horrifying twist that will make you wonder...Will any of them survive those dark hours Just Before Dawn? Starring Gregg Henry (MEAN DOG BLUES, RICH MAN POOR MAN), Deborah Benson (SEPTEMBER 30, 1955), Jamie Rose (TV's LADY BLUE), Chris Lemmon (TV's THUNDER IN PARADISE), and Ralph Seymour (UNDERGROUND ACES). CODE RED proudly presents JUST BEFORE DAWN painstakingly restored from the original 35mm Internegative.

Special Features.

+ FIRST TIME! ORIGINAL UNCUT VERSION from the original InterNegative
+ EXTENDED CUT, for overseas distribution
+ Original Theatrical trailer

R/ COLOR

VOICES FROM BEYOND - $19.99

LIMIT ONE PER CUSTOMER.
If you think the dead rest in peace, prepare yourself for Voices from Beyond, a chilling ghost story with a modern twist. The unexpected death of wealthy, middle-aged Giorgio from an internal hemorrhage has cast suspicion on his scheming family, all of whom had reasons to commit murder. Rosy, the innocent daughter, is tormented by her father's spirit, who demands the revelation of his killer. Could it be Giorgio's wife, his mistress, his stepson or his stepmother? Or perhaps an even more fiendish mind is at work within the dark, deadly confines of their sprawling estate? Soon Rosy's life is in danger as well as she races against time to unmask the face of true evil and silence the unearthly voice of a ghost out for justice. From the diabolical mind of Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci, the man behind The Beyond and Aenigma, comes one of his final voyages into the supernatural, laced with his trademark scenes of terror and mayhem. Turn down the lights, curl up tight, and listen closely - the voices from beyond might be out there waiting for you, too!

SNL's Amazing Wes Anderson Horror Trailer

I'm not much of an SNL fan really, especially the current stuff. I think it's pretty crappy at best, and at its worst it's nearly physically painful - try watching just two minutes of this clip and tell me you don't have the sudden urge to run outside and slam your car door on your own head. I do watch the show occasionally, but I mostly just sit there with a frown on my face due to how terrible the comedy is, and because I'm rapidly becoming an old man I sit there complaining that whatever the musical guest is playing "isn't music".

I'm glad I watched last night though, because for the first time in a very long time they came up with something actually really awesome. It's a spot on fake trailer for what a home invasion The Strangers/You're Next style horror film would look like if it were directed by Wes Anderson. This is pretty perfect as it looks 100% like a Wes Anderson trailer all the way down to the fonts. Apart from the stupid "Da Fuh?" quote towards the end of the trailer this could pass for a real movie. It's maybe not hysterically funny, but it's pretty great and even a bit informative. Who knew Edward Norton could do an amazing Owen Wilson?

The Beast of Hollow Mountain/The Neanderthal Man on Blu-ray from Scream

Check out the press release for Scream Factory's first double feature scheduled for 2014. The set includes The Beast of Hollow Mountain and The Neanderthal Man (which I believe was on the recently released Movies 4 You Sci-Fi Collection Volume 2 that just came out).

This January 2014, loyal fans are invited to combat the winter chills with a double dose of 50s high-camp creature features when Edward Nassour and Ismael Rodriguez’s THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN, starring Guy Madison (Blood of the Executioner) and Patricia Medina (Snow White and the Three Stooges), and E.A Dupont’s THE NEANDERTHAL MAN, starring Robert Shayne (How To Make A Monster), Richard Crane (Devil’s Partner), Doris Merrick (Untamed Women), Joyce Terry (The Beatniks) and Beverly Garland (It Conquered The World, The Alligator People), arrive on home entertainment shelves together in a double-feature 2-Disc BLU-RAY™+ DVD Combo Pack on January 28, 2014. This highly collectible home entertainment release features anamorphic widescreen movie presentation of THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN, which has never been available on DVD. Available for the first time on Blu-ray™, THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN/THE NEANDERTHAL MAN 2-Disc Blu-ray™+DVD combo pack is priced to own at $26.99 SRP.

The Beast of Hollow Mountain
Based on an idea by the legendary special effects wizard Willis O’Brien (King Kong, Son Of Kong, The Lost World), The Beast Of Hollow Mountain is a classic creature feature. An American rancher living in Mexico is staying near Hollow Mountain, an impenetrable swamp where, stories have it, dwells a living prehistoric Tyrannosaurus Rex!

The Neanderthal Man
A mad scientist uses his new serum on his housekeeper, turning her into an ape-woman. Like most crazed scientists, he then tries the serum on himself, creating…The Neanderthal Man! Robert Shayne, Richard Crane, Doris Merrick, Joyce Terry and Beverly Garland star in this harrowing creature feature.

Arrow's January/February Lineup Part II

And here's the remaining 6 titles due out from Arrow early next year.
Blind Woman's Curse

Released: 17 Mar 2014

Starring: Meiko Kaji, Hoki Tokuda, Makoto Satô
Directed by: Teruo Ishii

Overview: From Teruo Ishii “The King of Cult”, Blind Woman’s Curse (also known as Black Cat’s Revenge) is a thrilling Yakuza film featuring eye-popping visuals, thrilling samurai fight sequences and the gorgeous Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood, Stray Cat Rock), in her first major role.

Akemi (Kaji) is a dragon tattooed leader of the Tachibana Yakuza clan. In a duel with a rival gang Akemi slashes the eyes of an opponent and a black cat appears, to lap the blood from the gushing wound. The cat along with the eye-victim go on to pursue Akemi’s gang in revenge, leaving a trail of dead Yakuza girls, their dragon tattoos skinned from their bodies.

A bizarre blend of the female Yakuza film and traditional Japanese ghost story, with a strong dash of grotesque-erotica (the same movement was a sensibility of Edogawa Rampo whose works were adapted by Ishii in Horrors of Malformed Men), Blind Woman’s Curse is a delirious mash-up of classic genre tropes, to which Ishii was no stranger having directed everything from Super Giant films to Biker movies!

Special Features:
-New high definition digital transfer
-Newly commissioned artwork
-Collector’s booklet
-More to be announced!

 Pit Stop

Released: 31 Mar 2014

Starring: Brian Donlevy, Richard Davalos, Ellen Burstyn
Directed by: Jack Hill

Overview: RAW GUTS FOR GLORY! FLESH AGAINST STEEL!

The most dangerous game ever devised, to pit man against man, flesh against steel – the figure-8 race! Jack Hill (Coffy, Foxy Brown) follows up Spider Baby, once again teaming up with Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses) in one of his greatest roles for this action-spectacular crash-o-rama!

Richard Davalos (East of Eden) stars as Rick Bowman, a street punk who winds up in jail after a street race goes wrong. Bailed out by race promoter Grant Willard, Davalos is put in the deadly track where he comes up against Haig’s maniacal winner Hawk Sidney. Featuring an outstanding supporting cast including Brian Donlevy (The Quatermass Xperiment) in his last film appearance, Ellen Burstyn, billed as Ellen McRae (The Exorcist) and Beverly Washburn (Spider Baby) Pit Stop is one of Hill’s lesser known films but arguably his greatest.

Filmed on a real figure-8 track, Hill and his crew were able to capture gripping real-life car wreck scenes lending the film a brilliant sense of realism. You’ve never seen a motion picture like this before – can you take it?

Special Features:
-New high definition digital transfer
-Newly commissioned artwork
-Collector’s booklet
-More to be announced!

Arrow's January/February Lineup Part I

Yep, Part I, there's so many I need to split the post in two. Read on...
Phantom of the Paradise

Released: 17 Feb 2014

Starring: Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper
Directed by: Brian De Palma

Overview: Brian De Palma’s inspired rock’n’roll fusion of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Gray boasts an Oscar-nominated score by Paul Williams, who also stars as an evil record producer who not only steals the work of composer/performer Winslow Leach (William Finley) but gets him locked up in Sing Sing - and that’s not the worst that happens to him along the way.

Few revenge scenarios have ever been so amply justified, but the film is also constantly aware of the satirical possibilities offered by the 1970s music industry, exemplified by Gerrit Graham’s hilariously camp glam-rock star. Jessica Harper (Suspiria) appears in her first major role as the naïve but ambitious singer, on whom Winslow secretly dotes.

Prodigiously inventive both musically and visually, this is one of De Palma’s most entertaining romps, not least because it was so clearly a labour of love.

Special Features:
-New high definition digital transfer
-Newly commissioned artwork
-Collector’s booklet
More to be announced!

The Stuff

Starring: Michael Moriarty, Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris
Directed by: Larry Cohen
Rating: 15

Overview: Are you eating it ...or is it eating you?

The Stuff is the new dessert taking supermarket shelves by storm. It’s delicious, low in calories and – better still – doesn’t stain the family carpet… What’s not to like?! Well, for a start it has a life of its own, and we’re not talking friendly live bacteria…

Young Jason seems to be the only one who doesn’t love The Stuff – in fact he won’t go anywhere near it, after having seen the pudding crawling around the fridge one night. What’s more, everyone who eats The Stuff has started acting really weird... Now, teaming up with wise-cracking industrial saboteur “Mo”, Jason must put a stop to The Stuff and the organisation behind it or face a gooey, gloopy demise.

Coming courtesy of horror auteur Larry Cohen (director of the It’s Alive series and scribe behind the Maniac Cop trilogy), The Stuff is a titillating treat for the taste-buds which blends elements of films such as Street Trash with the straight-up B-movie flavour of The Blob. So grab a spoon and dig on into The Stuff – the taste that delivers… much more than you bargained for!

Special Features:
-New high definition digital transfer
-Newly commissioned artwork
-Collector’s booklet
-More to be announced!

Hell Comes To Frogtown
Released: 27 Jan 2014

Starring: Julius LeFlore, RCB, Roddy Piper
Directed by: Donald G. Jackson, R.J. Kizer
Rating: 15

Overview: With the 20th Century drawing to a close, nuclear war has wiped out civilization as we know it. The embattled human race’s last remaining hope lies with one man and his loaded weapon.

Sam Hell may be an ex-con, but he also happens to be one of the last surviving fertile men on the planet. Now, under the custody of a group of feisty female fighters, Sam finds himself enlisted on a mission to impregnate a harem of beauties. Sounds cushy enough, but the ladies in question are prisoners of Frogtown – home to a gang of mutant (and ill-mannered) amphibians!

Starring wrestler-turned-actor Rowdy Roddy Piper, known to John Carpenter enthusiasts for his body-slamming and bubblegum-chewing antics in They Live, Hell Comes to Frogtown is unashamedly a B-movie through and through with more guns and girls than you can shake a frog’s leg at.

Special Features:
-High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation
-Grappling with Green Gargantuans: Wrestling icon "Rowdy" Roddy Piper speaks about his leading man turn in Hell Comes to Frogtown
-Amphibian Armageddon: Actor Brian Frank remembers his role as Commander Toty
-Creature Feature Creator: Effects wizard Steve Wang reveals the secrets behind Hell Comes to Frogtown's mutant manifestations
-Reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork by Jeff Zornow
-Original Trailer
-Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by author and critic Calum Waddell

Robocop Latest 8-Bit NECA Action Figure

First Jason, then Freddy, now yet another iconic 80's movie character is getting a figure based on their not so iconic NES game. Introducing 8-bit Robocop:

Robocop is the third figure in our highly successful line of classic 8-bit video game tributes. Released at the very end of 1989 for the super popular 8-bit home console, the video game Robocop is an ’80s classic.

NECA’s Robocop (1989 Video Game Appearance) will be a fully articulated 7-inch figure with spring-loaded holster and Auto-9 Pistol. Robocop is painted in the blue-ish purple video game deco with a hint of cel shading. This figure comes in a special window box packaging with opening flap to re-create the look and feel of the classic 1989 video game packaging.

LIMITED TO ONE PRODUCTION RUN ONLY

If they plan to do more of these Nintendo figures, might I suggest Beetlejuice?

Blood, Tits & Satanic Albinos In New Trailer For 'Muck'

A new trailer has just hit for Steve Wolsh's upcoming film Muck, starring a staggering amount of hot women and Kane Hodder as Grawesome Crutal - which bests both Horace Pinker and Clear Rivers on the list of dumbest horror character names of all time. I kid, despite the character name sounding pretty ridiculous character name I think this one looks like it could be a lot of gory fun.

This is apparently the first in a trilogy of films, with the prequel "Offed" already in pre-preduction.

After narrowly escaping an ancient burial ground, long forgotten and buried underneath the marshes of Cape Cod, a group of friends emerge from the thick, marshy darkness, tattered and bloody, lucky to be alive. They have already lost two of their friends in the marsh, presumably dead. They stumble upon an empty Cape Cod vacation house alongside the foggy marsh and break in to take shelter. Whatever was in the marsh is still after them, and soon after one of them goes for help, the rest of the group learns that the evil in the marsh is not the only thing that wants them dead. Something worse, something more savage, was lying in wait just outside the marsh, in the house. What happens next is unspeakable, horror that cannot be unseen. These unlucky travelers spend their St. Patrick's Day trapped between two evils forcing them to fight, die, or go back the way they came.

Arrow Presents The People Under The Stairs

The release date for Arrow's upcoming Blu-ray release of Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs is fast approaching, and the full press release has just hit my inbox. Read on below for the details:

Arrow Video is thrilled to announce the UK Blu-ray release of Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs.
This Blu-ray disc will be available to own in the UK on 4th November and include packaging which will showcase the original poster artwork as well as a reversible sleeve with newly illustrated artwork.

On the new Blu-ray release, Arrow Video’s Ewan Cant says “As a huge Wes Craven fan, it was a dream come true to be able to work on the first ever Blu-ray release of The People Under the Stairs. Released in 1991, a few years before Wes Craven’s name would become synonymous with the Scream franchise, The People Under the Stairs is one film in the director’s resume which all but passed me by first time around: a fact which has made revisiting this movie all the more of a revelation. The People Under the Stairs is a real gem of early 90s horror which weaves gruesome visuals and pitch black comedy into a grim fairy tale for the ages – and with our new Blu-ray release, Craven fans get to see the film looking better than ever before! I was especially pleased that we were able to include on the disc an insightful interview with the great director himself, alongside engaging interviews with stars Sean Whalen (“Roach”) and A.J. Langer (“Alice”). Rounded off with some suitably grisly new cover art from the inimitable Stephen R. Bissette, this package represents the perfect Halloween treat!”

Synopsis
In every neighbourhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid…

Wes Craven, the master of terror who brought you the infamous The Last House on the Left, invites you inside another house of horror!

“Fool” may be a streetwise kid, but he makes a decidedly bad decision when he agrees to assist a family friend in the robbery of their landlord’s imposing homestead. What begins as a routine break-in soon begins to take a sinister turn as the would-be robbers find themselves trapped inside and face-to-face with the terrible secrets which lurk within the building’s walls – and under the stairs…

The People Under the Stairs
sees director Wes Craven return to one of his trademark themes: the savagery which lurks just underneath the skin of the outwardly conventional family unit. Often overlooked in favour of the director’s more A-list hits such as Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street, The People Under the Stairs is a superior slice of home-bound horror which can stand proudly alongside Craven’s best works.

Special Features:
·         High Definition digital transfer of the film by Universal Pictures
·         Original uncompressed Stereo 2.0 audio
·         Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
·         Audio commentary with star Brandon Quintin Adams, moderated by Calum Waddell
·         Fear, Freud and Class Warfare: Director Wes Craven Discusses the Timely Terrors of The People Under the Stairs

·         Silent But Deadly: Co-Star Sean Whalen on The People Under the Stairs
·         Underneath the Floorboards: Jeffrey Reddick, creator of the Final Destination series, recalls the lasting impact of The People Under the Stairs

An English scientist entertains a young American visitor, serving up tea, terror and a beautiful daughter – who is soon torn between her father’s evil ways and her need to protect the man she loves from a diabolical end.

Artsploitation Presents MARÇAL FORES' "Animals" On DVD And VOD, NOVEMBER 12, 2013!

An unconventional coming-of-age tale, Animals is an intoxicating blend of fantasy and cold reality. Seventeen-year-old high-schooler Pol has stubbornly extended his childhood, aided in no small measure by his opinionated, drums-playing, English-speaking pet teddy bear, Deerhoof. But when he meets alluring new student Icari, the safety of Pol’s innocent imagination crumbles as he experiences his first pangs of love and sexual longing. But what will happen to Deerhoof in this new world and can Pol accept his new-found feelings? Co-starring Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock) as his perceptive teacher, this fresh, inventive take on first love is funny, often bizarre and tragically intense.

Mondo Releasing Full Halloween Soundtrack on Vinyl October 31st

GQ has an exclusive scoop on Mondo's upcoming Halloween soundtrack release, which will be on sale October 31st at a random time that will be revealed on Mondo's Twitter. I don't know if I've bitched about this before, but I really don't like Mondo's "random Twitter sale announcement" thing. If they put out a poster or an album you just have to own you practically have to take the day off work to sit there and refresh your phone or computer every minute because once one of their items goes on sale it's usually gone in about 45 seconds. I know the suspense makes it more fun, and the scarcity makes it more collectible, but it still drives me nuts. Luckily I don't make enough money to afford anything Mondo is putting out, so it's never been an actual problem for me.

Halloween’s original motion-picture soundtrack by John Carpenter comes in a 2x LP in a Deluxe Gatefold packaging with artwork by Phantom City Creative. The record itself is a 180 Gram black vinyl, with randomly inserted orange vinyl, cut at 45RPM. Mondo’s release is a monumental one, as this is the first time that Carpenter’s Halloween has ever been released on vinyl in its full version. It will be the most comprehensive vinyl release of Halloween ever.

So get your refresh buttons ready, and make sure you follow @MondoNews prior to the October 31 release date. Maybe you’ll even get lucky enough to get one of the random orange variants. Check out the full track listing and additional images below.
