Remake Crazies

And now, The Crazies has a remake trailer. What is this, the 4th remake of a George Romero film? What's next, Knightriders?

The trailer kinda starts off looking like "Stroke Victims: The Movie" in a couple of scenes but it does end with some decent looking zombie onslaught action, so at least there's that. I'm taking a point off for the completely awkward use of Gary Jules cover of Mad World towards the end. A fine cover, but it does not work at all with the images onscreen. In fact, it works so little with the images onscreen that it kind of makes everyone involved look like a bunch of assholes.

"Stroke Victim: The Movie"...haha...since most people haven't seen the original, I hope they use that knitting granny scene, that was epic. I agree about the Mad World cover. What's wrong with using the Tears For Fears version? Nobody has to see Orzabal doing that crazy dancing from the video. "Crazy" by Aerosmith would've fit that trailer about as well as the Gary Jules cover.

  3. I caught the original "Crazies" on television as a kid, but really don't remember much about it. At this point going to the movies feels like I've joined a "Remake of the Month Club." The Stepfather? Prom Night? House on Sorority Row? Friday the 13th? Seriously, Rob Zombie's Halloween II might be one of the most original horror films of the year ... for no other reason than because it's not a remake. And that's sad.

  5. So basically the director wants to make 28 Days Later, but use Romero's set-pieces...

I understand that movie execs invest in remakes because they have a built-in audience, but if you're remaking an obscure-ish cult movie with a premise that's been used to death, how much interest can you expect to drum up? It's almost as canny as using the Sad World remake (as you pointed out) which stopped being compelling shortly after Donnie Darko was released.

Bitching about remakes aside, I think Martin would have been a much better choice to revisit.

  6. Tiger, yes!! Martin would've been a much better choice, and was a solid movie to being with, unlike Crazies which ran out of money during production and have numerous problems. The Martin concept hasn't been looted too much as well.

  7. I think this is a perfect time for the crazies ro be remade. The trailer kills my enthusiasm for his film though. What should be a paranoid-conspiracy-(zombie?) movie looks like cookie cutter trash.

Catch my thoughts on The Wicker Man remake:
