The Brains - The Monster Within Free Streaming

Canadian Horror-Punk band The Brains has a new album out called The Monster Within. I'm a metal guy myself, black, death, blackened death, thrash, doom, gothic, power, progressive - pretty much whatever kind of metal you've got, but I do seem to really enjoy this kind of super catchy punk with lyrics about ghosts, ghouls and chupacabras. Holy Shit - A Criterion Release for The Devil's Backbone

 Coming from Criterion July 30th. It's also scheduled to be entering my collection that same day.

This is my favorite Del Toro (Guillermo, not Benecio) film by about a mile. I've liked all of his stuff so far (though I don't like the Hellboys nearly as much as I thought I would), but I think The Devil's Backbone is the most consistently great film in his arsenal. Starts great, ends great, stays great in the middle. If you haven't seen it yet, this Criterion Blu-ray will surely be a great way to see it for the first time.

Bobcat Goldthwait's Found Footage Bigfoot

Badass Digest just posted their exclusive first look at the new Alex Pardee poster art for Willow Creek, a new found footage Bigfoot film from 80's comedian turned surprisingly solid director Bobcat Goldthwait. Premieres at the Boston Independent Film Festival on April 29th.

While I'm mentioning Bobcat I wanted to say his 2012 standup special "You Don't Look The Same Either" is pretty great, his story about an exploding plane engine at the end of the show is classic. If you've got Netflix streaming and enjoy standup do check that out.

Hilarious Faces of Death - The Graverobbers Edition

Today's Hilarious Face of Death comes to us courtesy of the 1988 film Grave Robbers (aka Dead Mate), directed by Straw Weisman, co-writer of Troma classic When Nature Calls.

A cute diner waitress/prostitute named Elizabeth Mannino is swept off her feet by a mysterious handsome stranger who looks like the end result of a drunken gay one night stand between Jimmy Fallon and Chris Kattan. Seriously, look at this guy:

He asks her to marry him literally within 30 seconds of meeting her. She probably finds this odd and suspicious, but since she's a hooker who also works in the saddest diner on Earth, she promptly agrees and they drive off in a limo. Here's the thing he forgets to tell her, he's a mortician and they will be living in the same house where he embalms corpses. Oh, and also he's a necrophiliac and he's going to kill and embalm her before they can proceed with consummation. The rest of the movie is Elizabeth acting poorly while having weirdo gore dreams, trying not to get death-sexed and trying to figure out just what is going on with her husband and his very bizarre town.

The character in the movie who provides the (most) hilarious death face is a high school girl (I think she was named Dawn) who is innocently driving her huge car to school. Suddenly, this poor girl is forced off the side of the road by Jimmy Kattan, where she crashes her car and is killed on impact. I bet she thought dying would be the last bad thing that would happen to her as a human, but nope, after the police leave she then has her carcass violated in the ambulance by pair of pervy paramedics. Very sad. And very unsanitary. However, it's very hard to feel sad for a character who dies looking like this:

Come on, that's your death face? Who dies like that? It looks like she bit her tongue...to death! I'm not even sure how she pulled this face off. I've just come back from trying it out in the mirror. I can't do it. This girl has too much tongue or something. 

With the bit of plot I've given away, this actually sounds like a pretty dark movie now that I'm reading this back to myself, but believe me there is nothing that takes place in this movie that isn't completely misguided and hilarious. This movie is an accidental comedy masterpiece. The Video Kart DVD double feature that sees Grave Robbers paired up with Andy Milligan's Monstrosity is long out of print, but if you happen upon it at a pawn shop, or a torrent site, it really sucks, do check it out. If you need another reason to watch this junker, this also happens in this movie:

Monster Squad "Monster Busters" Hardbox LE DVD from X-Rated Kult

Here's a cool German Monster Squad DVD that's just come out from X-Rated Kult under the alternate title of Monster Busters - which is what the film is known as in Germany. I think I kind of like Monster Busters as a title. Sure, it's more awkward as a title, but I think it works better for the movie. I always thought Monster Squad should've referred to Dracula and his Frankenstein/Mummy/Gillman/Wolfman team since they are technically a "squad" of "monsters", but it doesn't, the kids call themselves the Monster Squad. But the kids band together to kill or "bust" the monsters, and since the kids are the focal point of the movie Monster Busters is a more accurate title.

I'm always a sucker for these kinds of releases, I had to hold my right hand back to stop myself from clicking the place order button since I've ordered too much crap in the past couple weeks. Decent price on this actually, $20 over at Diabolik. Things like this are usually way more expensive in my experience.

Emily From The Beyond Gets Awesome Figure

Here's a very cool horror collectible I came across earlier. Emily and her not-always trusty dog Dickey from The Beyond. My first thought was "Sweet, I must own this at once." My second thought after clicking the link to the Otacute site and seeing the $161.50 price tag was "Uh, maybe not." That's like a whole month worth of lunches for me. Still pretty awesome.

Cold Prey II - Shout! Factory DVD Review

Country: Norway

Cold Prey II (original Norwegian title Fritt Vilt II) picks ups shortly after the events of the first film. Jannicke, the sole survivor of Geir Olav Brath's pickaxe murdering spree is nearly hit by a truck driven by a guy named Ole as she stumbles weary and dazed down the middle of the snowy road. Jannicke is taken to a nearby soon to be shut down hospital where Ole's girlfriend is a nurse.

She tells her story, a madman has brutally murdered her friends with a pickaxe and left their bodies in a crevasse in the mountains. The police are skeptical, but they head out and a few hours later they return with 5 bodies. Jannicke only had 4 friends with her in the first film, the fifth body happens to be Geir, the guy who killed all of her friends. One problem, he's not so much  "dead" as he is "alive". Just barely though, his heart is pumping about 10-20 beats per minute, just enough to keep him alive. Soon the doctor and nurses will discover they've made a pretty massive error in reviving the 7-foot tall killing machine.

The Nest - Scream Factory Blu-ray/DVD Combo Review

Roaches have never tasted meat... until now.

The quiet town of North Port is being overrun by cockroaches! Sheriff Tarbell (Franc Luz) believes that genetic experiments being conducted by the INTEC Corporation are the cause. Confronted with a potential disaster, Mayor Johnson (Robert Lansing) calls for help.

Warning: Dozens, possibly hundreds of roaches were harmed in the making of this film. I know a lot of people won't watch Cannibal Holocaust due to the very real animal death scenes, I'm not sure if there are these same kind of people for films with insect death, but if so, this is not the movie for you.

The Nest marked the directorial debut of Terrence H. Winkless who later directed Don "The Dragon" Wilson in Bloodfist and Michael York in the Not of this Earth remake remake in 1995 (this movie needs more remakes). Heading the cast is Franc Luz as Richard Tarbell, sheriff of the small town of North Port (population 700) who is dating Elizabeth (Lisa Langlois), the daughter of the Mayor (Robert Lansing). Sheriff Tarbell is kind of a charming, good time party sheriff - think Zack Morris, Ferris Bueller or any character John Cusack's ever been, but with handcuffs. He's a very likeable character and his scenes with Homer the doofus exterminator are often quite entertaining. The best character for me was Dr. Hubbard (Terri Treas), an adorably enthusiastic female scientist with extremely expressive eyebrows who is totally fascinated by the carnivorous cockroaches. She's an odd chick, she doesn't seem to care when flesheating roaches are eating through her glove and into her hand, she just loves to watch them work. Such a weird, fascinating character. I loved every minute she was onscreen.

Woochi: The Demon Slayer
This fantasy-action blockbuster based on a Korean folktale broke all box-office records in Korea in 2009. Jeon Woo-chi, an undisciplined, womanizing wizard unjustly accused of the death of his master,  is  trapped inside an ancient scroll until he is set free in 2009 by the wizards that imprisoned him to help fight against evil goblins that have taken over present-day Korea. The only problem is that Woo-chi is more interested in his new modern home – and the women of Korea –  than becoming a hero. Will he be the savior of mankind?

The film features amazing stunts and non-stop action choreographed by Doo-hong Jung (G.I. JOE: Retaliation, The Good The Bad & The Weird).

Deadball

Drive-in Collection: Anatomy of a Psycho/The Lonely Sex

Coming April 9th is the latest drive-in double feature from Vinegar Syndrome. The set features two early exploitation flicks; Anatomy of a Psycho from 1961 and The Lonely Sex from 1959.

Anatomy of a Psycho

 

Anatomy of a Psycho was directed by Russian Boris Petroff in 1961. Boris is probably best known among horror and MST3K fans as the director of The Unearthly with John Carradine. Starring Darrell Howe as the titular Psycho Chet, a real son-of-a-bitch rat-bastard who starts to lose his grip when his criminal brother is put to death in a gas chamber. He vows revenge upon everyone involved with his brother's death; the police, the judge, the judge's son, the judge's dog, uh, the judge's barber - seriously, everybody.

Coming April 30th from Shout! Factory's Scream Factory line is the Blu-ray debut of The Vampire Lovers, the 1970 Hammer film directed by Roy Ward Baker which stars the beautiful Madeline Smith, Ingrid Pitt and the not quite as beautiful Peter Cushing. Cushing in a Hammer vampire film, what?! This was originally released by MGM in 2003 under their beloved Midnite Movies line, paired up as a double feature with Countess Dracula. Despite the fact that I own the MGM DVD - and have since 2003, this was actually my first viewing of The Vampire Lovers.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume XXVI Review

Shout! Factory has just released yet another volume of Mystery Science Theater episodes. I love how consistent they are in keeping up with these releases. It’s great knowing that every 3 months or so I can look forward to getting another Mystery Science Theater set in the mail. And every time a new set is released, the news for the next set shows up online just before, or shortly after. See.

Media Blasters DVDs Done Dirt Cheap at Suncoast/FYE

Anyone with an FYE or Suncoast nearby, a bunch of old Media Blasters/Shriek Show/Guilty Pleasures DVDs have started showing up priced between $1.97 and $3.97. One thing to remember when going into a Suncoast or an FYE, be prepared to say "No, thanks" A LOT. When checking out the dude will offer you 4 different promotions, one month trial for their Suncoast card, a 6 issue free trial of Sports Illustrated that you'll forget to cancel and end up paying a hundred and seventeen dollars for the whole year...just keep saying no until you have the receipt in your hand and you will be fine.

These DVDs are scattered around the store, so you will have to look around a bit. I found a few in the horror section, a few in a bin right outside the front of the store, but most of them were on a wall with a sign that said something like "Low Priced Movies". At my store this wall was located partially behind the counter, which made me feel like I was going to accidentally rob the store while I was flipping through the discs.

Ultra-Limited Massage Parlor Murders Posters on sale April 5th

Spanish filmmaker Jesus Franco passed away yesterday at the age of 82. One of, if not the most prolific directors ever, directing just shy of 200 films in his 50+ year career - he directed 15 movies in 1983 alone.
