The Horrific Art of Basil Gogos

Basil Gogos' unique art style should be instantly recognizable to pretty much any horror fan. His work has graced the cover of  dozens of issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland and many other publications, his work was practically everywhere in the 60's and 70's. Boredom took over today and while digging around for some cool horror art I came across some 2258x3000 pixel scans of original Basil Gogos art and I knew I had to share. These things were huge, I think you could print great looking full sized posters with scans that big. I shrunk them down for this post, but they still look great. Well, the posters at least, some of the magazine cover scans aren't as high quality.

Up first, Linda Blair, fully demonized complete with facial lacerations, glowing yellow eyes and disgusting green tongue for Famous Monsters issue 111.

Next, Mr. Vinny Price from The Pit and The Pendulum for FM issue 14.

Baron Sardonicus was very pleased with Basil's work on his portrait for the cover of issue 126.

And now, my personal favorite from Eerie #30, a mummy about to become unwound while attacking a beatnik in a bathrobe. I really love the red on this one, Basil was so good he even managed to make his backgrounds beautiful. Even if you dropped the characters from the art, it would still be gallery worthy.

Midnight Tales - Approved By The Comics Code Authority!

Sorry about the several day gap between posts, I just haven't had time. Trying to get back into the swing of it here (what does that mean), so this is the 18 issue Charlton series Midnight Tales. The series ran from 1973 to 1976 and you can check them out right underneath this sentence.

Things To Watch For (Now with visual evidence!)

Forlorn Android Painters

Werewolf Vest

Toddler Mohawk

Sorbus, Goosestepping Magician

Uh, I think McGruff's creators owe this guy some money.

Bart Simpson's - Treehouse of Horror 1-8

Simpsons comics anyone? I personally don't really care too much for most of the Bongo Simpsons stuff, but these annual Treehouse of Horror issues are actually pretty awesome. They're great because they have other writers and artists who don't usually work on The Simpsons have a crack at a Simpsons story. I really enjoy seeing an artist incorporate their own style into a pre-existing character or series. I'm not sure why, but I guess it's just cool to see someone breathe some new life into something that you're so familiar with. In fact, I'd say that the War of the Colossal Beast inspired cover from issue #8 is possibly my favorite piece of Simpsons art I've ever seen. If it were I shirt, I'd strongly consider purchasing it. This one isn't too bad either:

Some of the artists featured include; Hilary Barta, Jeff Smith, Jim Mahfood, Jill Thompson, John McCrea, Mike Allred, and Sergio Aragones, just to name a few. My personal favorite is Hilary Barta's Power Plant of Pain, the artwork is just incredible. Here's a little sample:

This set is only for the first 8 issues, from 1995 to 2002. I am working on getting the remaining issues that came out between 2003 and now, I'll post them if I can get them. These scans (and the scans of none of the comics I post, actually) were not done by me, but I thank the scanners who did all the dirty work.

Just to let everyone know, I will have some new music up here soon. I'm putting the finishing touches on an unoffial soundtrack from the movie Spun, and the music from 1977's sophmoric sex romp The Van should also be up soon - Featuring the smash hit 'Chevy Van'! Check back for those in the next couple of days, along with whatever other stuff I may or may not get around to posting.

Army of Darkness - Ashes 2 Ashes

Okay, here's the Ashes 2 Ashes series. Sorry about switching up the order there.

On an absolutely completely unrelated note, while looking through some older files on my computer I found the Savage Streets CD cover I had made after I posted the soundtrack. So here's a look at that, if anyone needs it for whatever reason.

Army of Darkness - Shop Till You Drop Dead

Here are all 4 issues from Dynamite Comics' Army of Darkness - Shop Till You Drop Dead mini-series. Personally I think Shop Till You Drop....Dead would've been funnier. Dots equal funny.

Anyway, this series is actually a follow-up to another 4-issues series called Ashes 2 Ashes. I'll be posting that one later on today, I haven't read either yet and didn't realize the order they were supposed to go in. Ashes takes place immediately after the events of the film Army of Darkness, Drop Dead takes place immediately after Ashes. So just be sure to check out that one before you check out this one or you might be a little lost.

What Nameless Evil Lurks in the...Crypt of Shadows (?)

No, really, I'm asking...what nameless evil does lurk in the Crypt of Shadows? Anyone have any idea? I've gotta say, personally, I'm a bit stumped. For my 550th post (wavy gravy, that's a lot) I bring you what I believe is the entire run of Marvel's short lived Crypt of Shadows series. If you can't guess from the title or the covers this series isn't far removed from the EC Tales from the Vault of Shock Suspenstories style of storytelling. In other words, refrain from partaking in evildoing because payback's a bitch! A bitch usually involving some sort of zombie carnage.

The rar file available for download below contains issues 1-21, from January 1973 to November 1975. Like I said, I'm pretty sure the series only lasted for 21 issues, but I could be mistaken. If I am I'm sure someone will let me know.

Since these comics are only little over 20 pages each the files aren't nearly as big as the Warren issues I post (which are usually over 60 pages), it only ended up being about 150 MB for all 21 issues. I've split them over two parts and you need both parts to view the comics.

George A. Romero's Toe Tags #4-6

And here's the final 3 issues of George Romero's Toe Tags miniseries. Thanks to the original scanner of these issues. I know, I've said that on every single comic post I've put up, but I know the one time I forget the person who scanned them will see the post and be upset about it. Check back tomorrow, I should be back on track with an actual soundtrack or two for you all. Or, as people around these parts might be heard to say, y'all.

George A. Romero's Toe Tags #1-3

The other day I mentioned posting George Romero scribed comic books, so here's the first 3 issues of Toe Tags, the 6 issue series written by George, that was put out by DC Comics. If you've ever wanted to see an elephant whoop ass on a bunch of grotesque zombies alongside a hot woman and some bionic zombie dude, here you go. I've only had a chance to read these three issues, so I don't know how it ends yet, but I think it's a pretty cool miniseries from what I've seen so far. I suggest any zombie or Romero fans check these out (I'm talking about George here, but Eddie Romero fans might get a kick out of them too). I'll put the other 3 issues up later on.

I recommend CDisplay for reading the comics, but if you don't want to install yet another program on your computer you can also use WinRAR to open them. As always thanks go out to the kind individual(s) who took the time to scan these issues (I'm assuming it was someone who goes by Resin, since that appears on a few of the issues). Whoever is responsible, we thank you.

Dawn of the Dead in Comic Form

This is the 3-issue Dawn of the Dead series put out by IDW Publishing a few years back. I believe this series was put out to coincide with the release of the remake, even though it's based on George Romero's original film and not the remake. It was adapted for the 6 5/8 x 10 1/4" page by Steve Niles and the artwork is credited to Chee. I'm personally not a big fan of the artwork (aside from the awesome covers by Katherine S. Kolbert), as someone on Amazon.com stated, it kinda resembles the artwork found on those airplane safety pamphlets. But I'm sure you fellow fans of all things undead will still want to check these out.

I recommend CDisplay for reading the comics, but if you don't want to install yet another program on your computer you can also use WinRAR to open them. As always thanks go out to the kind individual(s) who took the time to scan these issues.
