New This Week 9.9

When a group of teenagers inadvertently kill his only son, Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen, Aliens) seeks the powers of a backwoods witch to bring the child back to life. But instead, she invokes ’the pumpkinhead’ (a monstrously clawed demon which, once reborn, answers only to Ed’s bloodlust). But as the creature wreaks it’s slow, unspeakable tortures on the teens, Ed confronts a horrifying secret about his connection to the beast: and realizes that he must find a way to stop its deadly mission before he becomes one with the creature forever. Also starring Jeff East (Deadly Blessing), Joel Hoffman (Slumber Party Massacre II) and Kerry Remsen (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), this ’atmospheric, moralistic tale’ (TV Guide) delivers demonic horror at its blood-drenched best.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Fifty years ago, the Japanese Defense Forces killed Godzilla or so they thought. When a series of terrifying natural disasters begin to plague Japan, including the inexplicable offshore sinking of a U.S. submarine, a mystic old man warns his nation that Godzilla has come back to destroy Japan as revenge for all the souls lost in the Pacific War. When mere military might cannot squash the monster, the mystic man awakens the Holy Beasts of Yamato - King Ghidorah, Mothra and Baragon, sleeping giants that protected Japan in ancient times. These untamed mammoth beasts take on Godzilla with frightening supernatural brute power that has been 2,000 years in the making. Akane Yashiro is transferred to join the Mechagodzilla team as an operator who controls the mechanical monster. As soon as Mechagodzilla starts on its test run, the huge shadow of Godzilla begins to rise from the depths of the ocean...The battle of the century is going to take place between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. Check Out Scream's New Pumpkinhead Artwork

Scream Factory has just posted their newly designed cover for their upcoming Pumpkinhead release. Scream's covers can occasionally be kind of hit or miss, but I think they really nailed it with this one, this is pretty perfect in my opinion.

"We may be in "Summer of Fear" mode now but that doesn't mean we can't talk about our upcoming Fall slate too. Check out the new key art for our upcoming Collector's Edition of Stan Winston's classic PUMPKINHEAD! This spot-on vision comes to us from veteran Scream Factory artist Justin Osbourn (Prince of Darkness, Phantom of the Paradise, Lifeforce, etc.)

The blu-ray release is planned for September. Pre-order links on our site at http://www.shoutfactory.com/screamfactory should appear in June in which a limited edition 18" x 24" poster of the art you see here will be available exclusively through us with purchase.

More details on full extras will be revealed in the Summer so stay tuned!"

Pumpkinhead + Pumpkinhead 2: Son of Pumpkinhead Coming From Scream Factory

I'm a bit late on posting this, I've been busy all day because I spent my first Record Store Day actually out at record stores. I didn't find the Bronx Warriors soundtrack I was after but I did make it on TV, so that was kind of neat -  I'm the balding beardy guy in the brown jacket (talking to the guy with the umbrella I didn't know but spent 2 hours of my life with) 22 seconds into this clip.

Anyway, big announcement from Scream Factory, followed by a less big announcement from Scream Factory:

Poster from ShitMovieFest. Not official Scream artwork.

Stan Winston’s 1988 monster film PUMPKINHEAD (one of our most highly-requested titles) will be coming to the ‘factory’ on Blu-ray for the first time this September! And…its 1993’s sequel PUMPKINHEAD II: BLOOD WINGS will be released on the same date too!

We announced these on the latest episode of “Choice Cuts” over at Shock Till You Drop. Check out the full episode where we also talk at length about our process, titles and more @ http://bit.ly/1ha5vkW

PUMPKINHEAD will be a “Collector’s Edition” (in fact, artwork is just about done) and PUMPKINHEAD II will be its own separate release. No further details to report at this time but we'll keep you posted on developments during our “Summer of Fear”.

I think Pumpkinhead is a legitimately good movie, so this is great news. Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings is a bit of a turkey, but my friend and I had one of our all time greatest movie riff offs during Pumpkinhead 2, so sure, it's a bad movie wrought with bad acting and startling continuity errors, but it's certainly quite entertaining, so count me in on both releases.

    Stan Winston dies at 62.

Tremendously sad news to report. After I had just posted the score from Pumpkinhead last week I just heard that film's director, special effects legend Stan Winston has passed away at the age of 62. Details about his death can be found here.

Most celebrity deaths don't affect me all that much, but this is really getting to me. I think of all the movie monsters and creatures he's been responsible for that I've loved over the years (Pumpkinhead, The Terminator, The Monster Squad villians, Edward Scissorhands to name a few) and it honestly gets me a little misty eyed. He seemed like such an enthusiastic and genuinely nice person every time I heard him speak in an interview. I, and a legion of horror/science fiction fans will miss him.

    Richard Stone - Pumpkinhead

I also had a request for this one, from the same person who was after E.T. if I recall correctly. This is Richard Stone's score from Stan Winston's underrated 1988 directorial debut Pumpkinhead. The film is also known by the hilarious title of Das Halloween Monster in Germany. I know very little German but I'm pretty sure there is a German word for 'Monster' and it's not Monster.

I've noticed that any females I've ever discussed the character of Pumpkinhead with (that would 2 of them, for those of you keeping track) seem perplexed when I tell them that Pumpkinhead in no way resembles a pumpkin. I guess they're assuming he'd look more like this guy, but I can't imagine Merv there invoking much fear into the hearts of moviegoers. The actual Pumpkinhead however, is a pretty frightening creation, so I'm glad then steered away from any kind of pumpkin resemblance. In fact, I'd say old Pumpkey is one of my all-time favorite movie monsters, at least appearance wise. I even have the Movie Maniacs figure of him on a desk next to Godzilla and the Chris Farley bobblehead. I'm not sure if a demon hellbent on vengeance could really be considered a "maniac", but I guess if Jaws is one, then Pumpkinhead is as well.
