I've noticed over the years that a great deal of bands (usually of the punk and/or metal variety) like to name songs after horror films, or characters from horror films. So I've gone ahead and put together this compilation I like to call "Werewolf In Unnecessarily Short Gym Shorts". I know, random sounding title, but when I was scanning the cover to the comic I used for the cover it just kinda came to me. I even threw a little "Wolfman's got nards" reference in there for those of you who, like myself, enjoy a good testicle joke. The title doesn't really make any more or any less sense than the title from the first compilation I did and nobody complained about that, so I guess we're good.
Like most compilations, I'm hoping you'll hear something you like here and find a band you've never heard of and end up falling in love with them. Of course, not a lot of people will just now be discovering The Ramones, The Misfits or Blue Oyster Cult, but there are some lesser known bands you might not have heard of. A lot of the albums these songs are from are in print, but I've seen a lot of similar comps on a lot of other sites, so hopefully nobody minds.
I cheated a bit, some of these songs really don't have a lot to do with the movie/character in the title, I don't think Fields of the Nephilim's Reanimator does, and Starkweather's Slither came out over a decade before James Gunn's film came out, but they are very cool songs, so I wanted to add them because I like them, they have movie titles, and they bump the tracklist up to an even 20 tracks. Admittedly it's an incredibly schizophrenic looking tracklist, but I thought it was about time someone put BOC and Mortician on the same album.

So, some notes on some of my choices:
Blue Oyster cult - Godzilla - I've heard this song so many times it's lost all meaning, but I just had to include it.
Sentinel Beast - Phantom of the Opera - We've all heard Iron Maiden's version a thousand times, so I thought I'd put one of the lesser known covers of it instead, this is a female fronted thrash approach to the song.
The Mist - Scarecrow - Cheated kinda with this one, the movie I'm thinking of is called Scarecrows, but I already put it on there, so I'll leave it, cool song. Although there are several movies with Scarecrow in the title. Also of note, the singer apparently attended the Lemmy School of Vocal Styling, but he must've dropped out halfway through because he can't quite pull it off.
Fields of the Nephilim - Reanimator - Based on the lyrics, this has nothing to do with Re-animator, it's not even spelled with the - in the title, but, like I said, it's a damn fine song, so here it is.
Starkweather - Slither - Cheated again, this came out waaaaayyy before the movie, but I enjoy it, hopefully you will too. It's actually probably too dark to fit in with this compilation.
Anyway, there you have it, Werewolf in Unnecessarily Short Gym Shorts, check it out and stop back by and let me know what you think. I'm still working on my next compilation, Rollercoaster...Of Death, which I started quite a while ago, hopefully I can finish it up soon.

Great compilation. I like the idea of grouping all the horror themed songs into one bunch!
The only thing I knew about Fields of the Nephilim before was that Richard Stanley directed a number of their music videos!
Perhaps you could combine a number of your titles into one huge 'megamix' title e.g. "My heart is an unnecessarily short rollercoaster to the tomb, and you are engraving a werewolf onto my gym shorts...of death!"
excellent stuff - was most touched by the addition of phenomena - it is years since I listened to that album - indeed the cassette of it is probably in the loft!
Thanks colin, hope you enjoy it. Fields of the Nephilim are great, their song Mourning Star off their last album is probably my favorite song. Not just by them, but by anyone. I think a lot of people are put off by the odd vocals, but I think they're fantastic.
Great idea for the Megamix title, hell Gym Shorts...Of Death alone is worthy of being a title! I might do it at some point, the Rollercoaster compilation is going towards a more frightening/darker sound, stuff from Deathdream and Messiah of Evil for example, which might not work so well because the cover I've made uses another EC Comic style piece of art, which while spooky, never really reaches over to scary territory.
taliesin - yeah I really like that Phenomena track, I accidentally stumbled upon that album when trying to find the soundtrack to Argento's Phenomena. Lucky little accident there I guess.
Phelpster, got to concur with Mourning Sun, great album - now, if only they'd tour!
Oh crap, I like how it's my "favorite song" but I don't even get the freakin' title right. I was listening to it when I wrote that for god's sake, come On! Sorry, I meant Sun, not Star. You know what I meant obviously, just hate making stupid mistakes. (As opposed to smart mistakes?)
Anyway, yes a great album, even better with the right title, that is how a "comeback" album is supposed to sound.
I especially love the title and cover, very creative. Thank you!
i know this is pretty old.. but is there anyway someone could re-up this?
latest anonymous - Sure, I'll start re-uploading it now. I'm about to go to sleep, but if I don't get it up tonight look for it tomorrow.
Okay, it's back up now, hope you enjoy it!
Best cover...ever. Seriously, I show this one to random people.
Killer mix and seriously great title.
Do you have "Zombie Stomp" by the Del-Airs, also from The Horror of Party Beach?
PS - Do you have a preferred page, or forum, for requests?
Thanks mate!
