Jim Kelly Dies at 67

Goodbye Black Belt Jones.

From Deadline:

The martial arts grandmaster who starred alongside Bruce Lee in the iconic 1973 film Enter The Dragon died yesterday. He was 67. His ex-wife confirmed his death in a Facebook post. Jim Kelly was an international karate champion with his own school in LA when he was cast in the kung fu classic billed as “the first American-produced martial arts spectacular. His fighting skills and imposing screen presence — a lanky 6-foot-2 topped by a funky Afro — earned Kelly the title role in 1974′s Black Belt Jones. After that, he appeared in numerous action films through the ’70s. Later he became a professional tennis player, joining the USTA Senior Men’s Circuit and starred alongside LeBron James in a 2004 Nike TV ad.

Return Of The Living Dead's Tarman Gets His Own Vintage Halloween Mask

Here's something that should give Return of the Living Dead fans out there a stiffy; Fright Rags is putting out a limited edition Ben Cooper style vintage Halloween mask and each mask comes with a shirt featuring new artwork from ROTLD production designer William Stout.

I cannot express in words how much I love the Tarman mask. I like the shirt that comes with the mask, but I would've bought this in a second if the mask came with the other shirt. I still might have to grab one of these either way, maybe both. These will only be on sale for a 4 day period, so if they don't sell out of the 500 in those 4 days, it's done either way. For more info and specific ordering times check out Fright-Rags.

Latest Conjuring Trailer Looks....Awesome?

I have to say I've never really liked much of James Wan's work. I strongly dislike Saw (and the insipid series that followed) and while I didn't hate Dead Silence as much as Saw that whole movie was so BLUE it gave me a bit of a headache. Insidious was a big step in the right direction, very creepy at times, though it still kind of fell apart for me in the end. The Conjuring however looks like the movie that might change my opinion of Wan, this actually seems kind of great. I'm especially excited after this latest trailer, it certainly doesn't hurt that the trailer narration sounds a lot like the opening narration from Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

For some fun head over to the IMDB board for The Conjuring and count the number of threads, not posts, but actual separate threads about how funny the hand clapping in the trailer is. There are like 8 threads on that first page alone. I didn't make it to page 2 to see if the hand clapping discussions continue because spending more than 20 consecutive seconds reading the IMDB boards has been know to cause brain damage in 3 out of 5 adults over the age of 24.

What Evil Drives...The Car From Arrow Video

"Arrow Video is pleased to announce the worldwide Blu-ray debut of Elliot Silverstein’s 1977 cult horror classic “THE CAR” on Monday 15th July.

Often referred to as “Jaws on Wheels”, THE CAR has been lovingly re-mastered by Universal Pictures and, for the first time in its history, will finally be available on the Blu-ray format. This landmark release also marks the first time the film has been available with extras.

Starring James Brolin (The Amityville Horror; father of Josh Brolin) alongside Kathleen Lloyd (The Missouri Breaks), John Marley (The Godfather), and Ronny Cox (Deliverance), THE CAR tells the story of a mysterious automobile which goes on a murderous rampage, terrorizing the residents of a small town.

In addition to the HD restoration, Arrow has sourced a host of bonus material and special features, something which has never been done before for this film. The deluxe Blu-ray package includes Audio Commentary with director Elliot Silverstein, two exclusive featurettes on the making of the film and its history, the original theatrical trailer with commentary by John Landis (director of An American Werewolf in London), extended collector’s booklet and, as is becoming customary with Arrow Video’s classic film releases, an exclusive reversible sleeve, containing both the original and newly commissioned artwork. THE CAR’s brand new sleeve comes courtesy of acclaimed illustrator Joe Wilson.

A complete list of the special features included on the deluxe blu-ray release of THE CAR is as follows:
- High Definition presentation (1080p), on Blu-ray for the first time in the world!
- Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
- Audio commentary with director Elliot Silverstein, moderated by Calum Waddell.
- “Making a Mechanical Monster” – Special effects artist William Alridge remembers The Car.
- “Hitchhike to Hell” – Actor John Rubinstein recalls becoming a victim of The Car.
- Trailer commentary by director and The Car fan John Landis.
- Original Trailer.
- Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Joe Wilson.
- Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Cullen Gallagher as well as a brand new interview with co-writer Michael Butler, conducted by Calum Waddell, illustrated with original archive stills and artwork.
- Easter Egg."

I'm really looking forward to this one, I never got around to seeing it so this should be a great way to see it for the first time. Fun Fact: Director Elliot Silverstein directed one of the all-time great Tales From The Crypt episodes The Reluctant Vampire with Malcolm McDowell and Michael Berryman. "Have you had any dental work in the last 72 hours?"

A Band Called Death - New Doc About The Punk Pioneers

No, not this band called Death, these guys were kicking around under the name Death nearly two decades before Chuck Schuldiner and crew. You can find info on how to check out the documentary below, I have a weird aversion to paying $10 for anything digital, so I'm waiting for a Blu-ray or DVD release.

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death.

Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album.

Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

Be sure to head over to the Drafthouse site for the film where you can find a list of upcoming theatrical screenings and places to download the film online. You can also pick up the brilliant "...For The Whole World To See" album, and an original style Death t-shirt on the same page. You can check the entire album out here.

The Dude Designs Amazing Poster For...The Heat?

I'm sure most of you know The Dude Designs as one of the most popular horror poster designers out there, just last year alone he put out these, among others:

His latest poster is equally badass, the problem is that it's for a Sandra Bullock film. Director Paul Feig is a funny dude, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but the countless TV spots for The Heat I'm hit with every 7 minutes have been nearly laugh-free, apart from the 1 second shot of Buster from Arrested Development. And that really only makes me laugh because I look a lot like Buster from Arrested Development. Only with a beard.

These are being given away for free at Alamo Drafthouse theaters, so anyone whose girlfriend or wife drags them to see this at an Alamo theater will at least get a cool poster out of it.

Collectible poster will be available for free at participating Alamo Drafthouse locations while supplies last

Austin, TX– Monday, June 24, 2013 – Mondo is excited to unveil a collectible full size poster for The Heat from artist The Dude Designs. The explosive piece of art will be available for free at 10pm opening night showtimes of The Heat on June 27 at Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the country, while supplies last*.  From director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), The Heat stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

“I am a huge fan of the work Mondo does so I was really pushing for them to do a poster for The Heat,” says Feig. “When they sent me their take I cracked up as they really nailed it.”

“Everything Paul Feig touches is amazing, so we were incredibly excited when he reached out to us and asked us if we wanted to do a poster for The Heat. After watching an early screening of it, we were sold on the movie’s hilarity and this poster is the direct result,” said Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael.

Commenting on the inspiration for the artwork, Tom ‘The Dude Designs’ Hodge said,“The Heat poster was an exciting design to take on. Galvanized by the awesome power of VHS cover art I set to work creating the ultimate 80s action buddy cop visual, drawing out the humor in an explosion of over the top action.”

Uptight FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) couldn’t be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies.

*Look closely for a special Paul Feig cameo in the art!
Participating Alamo Drafthouse markets include:
San Antonio:
Kansas City:
Northern Virginia:

*Posters will be available at each location and can be redeemed beginning at 8pm on Thursday, June 27 for attendees of the 10pm showtimes only.  Attendees must present their 10pm showtime ticket for The Heat to redeem a poster. Purchase of a ticket does not guarantee a poster and will be given out first come, first served while supplies last.

Fangs of the Living Dead Gets Rifftraxed

Rifftrax has just released a their latest Video Demand and it should be pretty great; Armando de Ossorio's Fangs of the Living Dead, which has become a staple of low budget public domain DVD box sets.

I don't now about the rest of you but I've really been enjoying these Rifftrax Video On Demand releases. I loved MST3K because the writing and performing was hilarious first and foremost, but I also loved it because I love crappy movies. When Rifftrax started pretty much exclusively riffing "real" movies like Twilight and Harry Potter (yawn) they kind of lost my interest. But now that they're doing stuff like this, Kingdom of the Spiders and When a Stranger Calls Back I'm fully back on board.

Hell Baby - Get Possessed By This Horrifically Comedic Trailer

Enjoy this official trailer for Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon's latest film Hell Baby, a kinda sorta horror comedy with Rob "Lougle" Courdry and Leslie "Ricky Bobby's wife" Bibb.

An expectant couple who moves into the most haunted house in New Orleans call upon the services of the Vatican's elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby.

I'm looking forward to this one, I've always enjoyed Garant and Lennon's work on The State and Reno 911!. I even liked Viva Variety which I believe nobody watched, so I'm a fan of these two. Trailer looks pretty funny, though I can imagine the accents they're doing might get annoying after a while.

The Lords Are Coming From Anchor Bay September 3rd

Lords of Salem, the latest (and allegedly final) film from the internet's favorite Horror director will be hitting Blu-ray and DVD September 3rd from Anchor Bay. News ganked directly from No cover art has been announced so for now, enjoy this poster featuring a skull with Hitler haircut (am I the only one seeing Hitler when they look at this skull?).

Heidi, a radio DJ, is sent a box containing a record -- a "gift from the Lords." The sounds within the grooves trigger flashbacks of her town's violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the Lords back to take revenge on Salem, Massachusetts?

The horror fans of the internet really do seem to hate Zombie, while I'm not a huge fan of his work I personally find it hard to actually hate the guy. I say can anyone who is regularly employing Ken Foree and Sid Haig really be all that bad?

Arrow Presents Exit Starring Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen

Arrow Films is pleased to announce the UK DVD debut of EXIT, an action-packed Scandinavian thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, The Hunt, Hannibal) and Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood).

Directed by Peter Lindmark, EXIT is a tense and exhilarating Swedish thriller surrounding Thomas Skepphult (Mads Mikkelsen), a wealthy investor at the peak of his career.

On the cusp of securing one of his biggest and most lucrative deals, which will see he and his fellow partner sell their stake in a rival firm, Thomas seems to have it all – a beautiful wife, Anna (Kirsty Torhaug), a lovely daughter, Ebba (Johanna Dickson), an expensive villa by the water and a financially secured future.
Just before the deal is to complete, Thomas’ partner and mentor William is found brutally murdered, and Thomas is named as the prime suspect. Due to the financial incentive, and a harrowing link to the murder weapon, Thomas must embark on a desperate campaign to protest his innocence and protect his family, eliciting the help of two closely trusted allies.

Thomas learns that when things go sour in the upper echelons of the corporate world, and a way out is not for sale, the wealthy and powerful must summon the same raw survival instincts as the common man.
Reminiscent of films like The Fugitive, EXIT is a gripping action thriller brimming with surprising twists and turns. Notably strong performances include Alexander Skarsgård as Fabian von Klerking, Thomas’s faithful associate; and Samuel Fröler as the psychotic and menacing villain, Morgan Nordenstråle.

Mads Mikkelsen once again combines high drama and action convincingly, proving his worth as arguably the best Nordic actor of a generation. Stylish Swedish production and excellent performances make EXIT a must-see for UK Scandi-philes looking for their next fix!

The massive UK success of subtitled television dramas such as The Killing and Wallander paved the way for many more top Nordic shows and feature films to find an emphatic audience in the UK.

Deep Discount's 13% Off Code - Expires 6/27

Deep Discount's 25% Off Sale took place earlier this month, but their practice of only including select titles in the sale usually makes that sale kind of a bust. Today they've put out a coupon code "DEEP13" that takes 13% off your order. Code expires 6/27 at Midnight.

Sure, it's nowhere near as good as 25%, but the 13% does seem to actually work for most of what is on the site so you have a lot more choices with this new code. It's a way to grab a lot of the Scream Factory titles for about $15, which is the cheapest I've seen new copies go for. Tons of other decent deals, these are just some that stood out for me given how rarely they are on sale.

Drive-In Ads of the 1970's: Part II The End of the Trilogy

More newspaper drive-in ads of the 1970s here. Man, they really knew how to sell schlock movies back then, I would've been at the Cardinal constantly.

Weekend Pass + Games Guys Play From Code Red

Latest release from Code Red is up now at BigCartel. Great that he's still putting stuff out, though I'm not too big on the Titty Comedy genre that these two appear to belong to, I'd really like to see more Horror soon. I'm especially hopeful that he hasn't scrapped the plans for the Nailgun Massacre Blu-ray release.

Another double bill with your lovely host Maria Kanellis!!!

Attacked by a crowd of poop-covered undead who emerge from an outhouse toilet, the group seeks refuge in the home of the strange Dr. Tanaka, who conducts experiments on the zombies ... and who has another fate in mind for the five strangers. Can Megumi s karate help them escape, or will she have to rely on the liberating power of farts to save the day?

Foxy Brown (Region B, Arrow Video)

From Arrow is the Blu-ray debut of one of Jack Hill's most popular films Foxy Brown, available in a standard edition, or the extra sexy Steelbook version.

When Foxy Brown s undercover-agent boyfriend is gunned down on the orders of evil drug kingpins, she stops at nothing to exact a thrillingly brutal revenge. This is one of the all-time great blaxploitation films, pulling out all the stops at a time long before anyone thought of inventing political correctness.

Pam Grier was given the role of a lifetime as the street-smart yet intensely sexy Foxy, modelling a stupendously varied range of Seventies threads while righteously kicking villainous white butt at every opportunity. She s also given sterling support from Antonio Huggy Bear Fargas as her no-good younger brother and a memorably funky soundtrack.

  • Limited Edition SteelBook packaging with exclusive artwork
  • Restored High Definition Blu-ray presentation (1080p)

  • Photo gallery of behind-the-scenes and publicity images
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Trailer Reel Trailers for all the major works by Jack Hill including Foxy Brown, Coffy and Switchblade Sisters
  • Collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Josiah Howard, author of Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide, a new interview with Pam Grier by Jack Hill biographer Calum Waddell, illustrated with original archive stills and posters
Get the Blu-ray from Amazon UK. Or why not splurge a little and grab the Steelbook.

I don't normally mention music releases here, I feel compelled to mention today's release of Deceiver of the Gods by one of my personal favorite bands Amon Amarth. I haven't heard the album yet, but they're one of the most consistent bands in all of metal, I buy all their albums the second the preorder goes up because I know Amon Amarth never disappoints. The Deluxe Edition CD+EP is only $12 right now, so buy it up.

The Bigfoot Witch Project - Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek Trailer

First trailer for 80's comedian Bobcat Goldthwait's upcoming Bigfoot film Willow Creek. The film will be playing at the Fantasia Film Festival, here's hoping those of us not going to Fantasia will have a chance to see it soon:

Jim and  his girlfriend Kelly are in Willow Creek, California, to retrace the  steps of Bigfoot researchers Patterson and Gimlin, who, in 1967,  recorded the most famous film of the legendary monster. Kelly is a  skeptic, along for the ride to spend time with her boyfriend between  acting gigs. Jim, a believer, hopes to capture footage of his own, so  his camera is constantly rolling.

The small town is a mecca to the Bigfoot community; sasquatch statues  guard the local businesses, murals of the missing link line the roads,  and Bigfoot burgers are the town delicacy. The couple interview locals  who range from skeptic to believer and from manic to completely  menacing. Some of the stories they hear are of chance encounters with a  gentle creature, while others are tales of mysterious eviscerations.

On the day that Jim and Kelly plan on hiking into the woods to look  for proof, they are given a simple warning: “It’s not a joke. You  shouldn’t go there.” Despite the ominous message and Kelly’s own  reservations, they head deep into the forest to set up camp. The events  that follow will make them wish they had simply spent the night at the  Bigfoot Motel.

Schoolgirl Report Vol. 10 From Impulse Pictures

"Every Girl Starts Sometime…"
(aka Sexy Schoolwork)

Schoolgirl 10SCHOOLGIRL REPORT VOL. 10: Every Girl Starts Sometime makes learning fun!
A classroom discussion about “legislation and morals” leads to some all-new sexy stories with the popular SCHOOLGIRL REPORT cuties. This all-new volume of the popular German erotic series will have you laughing in your seat and unable to stand up (if you know what we mean).

A high school teacher is accused of assaulting the young Susanne while personally tutoring her, but the truth is much crazier than fiction in this pants-swelling tale. Inga is very shy about sex, but loves to only touch herself.  Little does she know, as she begins her search for the ultimate encounter, that she’ll end up in a room full of horny men with plans all their own!  In the third story, a pool party turns into an illicit affair for one boy who, on a dare, tries to seduce his girlfriend’s mother... but the secretive girlfriend has a shocking hidden agenda.  In what may be the craziest story yet in a SCHOOLGIRL REPORT film, a young couple fool a family by staging an entire “Exorcist” scenario to have sex, with the boyfriend being the religious savior and the girl as the “demonically possessed” innocent!  And in the final story, a young schoolgirl becomes the mistress of a much older man but, when his wife finds out, all hell breaks loose.

Just discovered this listing on Amazon. No specs or features have been announced yet, but I'll keep you informed when that info is released.

Drive-In Ads of the 1970s: Part 1

The other day while checking out the DVDManiacs/AVManiacs forum I came across a post from a guy who shared hundreds of newspaper ads from the 70's from the Owensboro, Ky area. Quite an assortment of horror, exploitation and kung fu - and with permission from the DVD Maniac who posted them, I've decided these were too cool not to share.

In this first installment be on the lookout for Mall Zombies, a sinister double feature made in Hell, an unholy army of vicious rats, human cat food, and an Italian vampire dog who wears a fucking cape.
