Arrow Video To Release Blow Out Blu-ray

Arrow has just posted their complete press release for their upcoming Blu-ray of Brian De Palma's 1981 film Blow Out with John Travolta, Nancy Allen and John Lithgow. Due out Monday, May 24th. Full details below:

Arrow Video is pleased to confirm the highly anticipated UK Blu-ray & Blu-ray Steelbook release of Brian De Palma’s 1981 classic BLOW OUT on May 27th.

The UK Blu-ray premiere of BLOW OUT features a newly restored digital transfer of the film, a process which was supervised and approved by De Palma himself.

The super-deluxe package, which is available both as a standard Blu-ray and as a limited edition Blu-ray steelbook, is LOADED with special features and bonus material. Highlights include a selection of newly created video interviews with starlet Nancy Allen, producer George Litto, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond and composer Pino Donaggio, original theatrical trailer, photo gallery and a stunning 40-page collector’s booklet. The booklet features an exclusive and revealing conversation between Quentin Tarantino and Brian De Palma, one of his all-time favourite directors and biggest influences, as well as new writing on the film by critic Michael Atkinson, illustrated with archive movie stills and promotional material. 

Keeping with what is a now a fan-favoured tradition of Arrow Video restorations, BLOW OUT will come complete with a reversible sleeve, featuring the original 1981 artwork and a stunning new illustration.

One of the greatest film directors of his generation, Brian De Palma’s inspirational career spans 40 years and includes commercial and critical successes in each decade since the 1970s. Alongside the likes of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Ridley Scott, De Palma was part of the so-called “New Hollywood” movement which ruled tinsel town throughout the '70s and ‘80s.

Best known for his psychological and often violent thrillers, De Palma’s use of split-screens, slow panning shots and Hitchcockian suspense have made his films instantly recognisable. Alongside 1981’s BLOW OUT, some of De Palma’s most revered works include Scarface, Carrie, Dressed To Kill, The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible.

 

De Palma has proved hugely influential, inspiring many modern-day film makers to get behind the camera; Quentin Tarantino reveals in BLOW OUT’s collector’s booklet that he views De Palma as the best living American director. Also known for discovering and nurturing new acting talent, De Palma is widely credited with fostering the early careers of Robert De Nero and John C. Reilly.

It has recently been announced that De Palma will once again reunite with Scarface star Al Pacino, when the pair work together on Happy Valley, a biopic about Penn State University's controversial former American football coach, Joe Paterno, who was forced to retire after a sexual abuse scandal took place on his watch.

Synopsis

BLOW OUT is one of De Palma’s most acclaimed films, a brilliant fusion of the obsessive sleuthing of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-up, and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation. With themes drawn from real-life political scandals (the JFK assassination, Chappaquiddick, Watergate) BLOW OUT starts with sound technician Jack Terry (John Travolta) accidentally recording what might be explosive evidence of a deadly conspiracy.

Brilliantly shot by the then recent Oscar-winner Vilmos Zsigmond, this terrifically stylish thriller co-stars Nancy Allen as the eyewitness who becomes the unwitting target of a deranged serial killer (John Lithgow), as he ruthlessly attempts to bury all the evidence.
BLOW OUT is also a film about the filmmaking process itself: soundman Terry is originally hired to work on the low-budget slasher film Coed Frenzy, and later puts his technical skills to more serious use as he attempts to reconstruct a political assassination on film, in a way that will stand up in court.

Earth finds itself at war with the armies of Hell, led by a sadistic bastard named Count Draculon - like Dracula mixed with Satan, and do I detect a bit of Hitler? After watching his brother die by Draculon's hands (or fangs, more specifically) a soldier (Matthew Kennedy) does what no other man has been brave enough to dare try, he takes on Draculon to avenge his brother's death. This of course immediately backfires within about 4 seconds and he dies a swift and spectacularly violent death.

Cut to the opening credits, where we see him being Robocopped back to life with a variety of junkyard hardware. Shortly after his rebirth (rebooting?) Manborg finds himself imprisoned in a futuristic jail with a few other prisoners:

• Justice (Conor Sweeney) - Denimed Australian. Dance fanatic.
• Mina (Meredith Sweeney) -  Justice's hot sister. Isn't Australian. Fights Anime style. Fact: Meredith is Conor's hot sister in in real life as well.
• #1 Man (Ludwig Lee) - looks like Lui Kang, talks like the guy who does the Dragon Ball Z narration because he's dubbed by the guy who does the Dragon Ball Z narration (Kyle Hebert)

Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector

Here's a documentary I've been waiting to see for what seems like an eternity, Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector, directed by Levi Peretic, and the bearded wonder behind VHShitfest Dan Kinem.

After checking out the trailer I'm reminded how jealous I am seeing all the amazing tapes people score because I have personally had terrible luck over the years with finding quality VHS tapes. Even before VHS collecting became super popular again (and finding good stuff at non-ridiculous prices became virtually impossible) in the past 4-5 years I'd only really found a few fairly obscure titles; Clash of the Ninjas, Blood Tracks, Mama Dracula (one of the worst vampire movies ever), and a few others I can't remember. Anytime I'm in some weird piece of shit thrift store or pawn shop (which is fairly often) I always  look through the VHS tapes and the most obscure thing I usually find is Dorf on Golf, which I seem to find at every store. Did that many people buy Dorf on Golf, or is this one copy getting passed around from second hand shop to second hand shop?

Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector is a feature-length documentary directed by Dan Kinem and Levi Peretic that sheds light on the growing VHS culture and the community of collectors that still cherish what many refer to as a "dead format." It is a passion project made by true lovers of the format for not only people who love VHS, but also for people who can remember having to rewind a movie before they could watch it and for people who remember the glorious days of going to the video store each weekend to rent a movie.
 
It was culled from over 1,000 hours of footage and over 100 interviews with collectors, distributors, and video store owners like Lloyd Kaufman (head of Troma Entertainment), Tony Timpone (former editor of Fangoria), Fred Vogel (director, August Underground), Sam Sherman (horror producer extraordinaire), Zack Carlson (producer American Scream), Mike McPadden (head writer, Mr. Skin), and many, many more.

The film was completely funded through Kickstarter and has been a huge community effort. Directors Levi and Dan run the popular VHS-review site VHShitfest, and the film was produced by Matt Desiderio of Horror Boobs Video and Josh Schafer of Lunchmeat Magazine. Adjust Your Tracking premiered in Los Angeles on April 5th at the Days of the Dead convention, played at Texas Frightmare Weekend, and is currently booking more screenings around the world, including an Adjust Your Tracking VHS Tour in August. 

The movie is playing at the 92YTribeca on May 24th in New York City, at PhilaMOCA in Philadelphia on May 25th, and more. Ray Harryhausen - June 29, 1920 - May 7th, 2013

"Ray Harryhausen, the pioneering visual effects artist perhaps best known for his work on 1963's "Jason and the Argonauts," died today in London. He was 92.

The announcement was made on the official Facebook page of The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, which noted that "Harryhausen's genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray's hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so."

New Releases 5/7

Another week, another list of new releases Manchester Morgue thinks you should check out.

The ABCs of Death - With 26 different directors, this is the most even film in the history of film. Each director was given a letter of the alphabet and a budget of $5,000. Shorts range from 30 seconds (what did Ti West spend his $5,000 on?) to several minutes in length. Some are excellent, some are okay, and a few are among the worst things I've ever seen. But the shorts all move along pretty quickly so even during the worst shorts the suffering is short lived. It's like a technical death metal album, you don't like a riff, just give it a second, a new one is right around the corner. 

Oddly I seem to have only really enjoyed shorts that came after N; Bruno Forzani & Héléne Cattet's O is for Orgasm,  Adam Wingard's Q is for Quack, Srdjan Spasojevic's R is for Removed, LeeHardcastle's T is for Toilet (hey, clever toilet humor can be possible), Ben Wheatley's U is for Unearthed, Xavier Gens' X is for XXL, Jason Eisener's Y is for Youngbuck. When his father's boat crashes during a storm, Aaron Fallon (Russ Harvey) and the ship's captain (Lee Morgan) find themselves the only survivors washed ashore on an unknown island. While seeking help on the island the men are accosted by a tribal looking dude called Mantis (Maurice Harris) who beats them pretty severely and takes them to the castle of drunken lunatic Count Lorente de Sade (William McNulty). The Count is the type of drunk who gets so hammered he starts to hallucinate apparitions who look like a faggy magicians that frighten him with various rubber creatures; a cobra, a massive bat and the worst giant spider I've seen since the last time I watched Nude for Satan

After an awkward dinner that almost ends with a fist fight with the Count, Aaron heads back to his room to find the captain missing with a pool of blood on the bed where he had previously laid. He questions Cassandra, a strange woman who also lives at the castle, but she's one of those spooky movie chicks who only answer questions with vagueness, so no luck there. So he does what any concerned friend would do, he decides to just go to sleep.

Dead Sushi - Blu-ray Review

Keiko (Rina Takeda) is a young female sushi chef who is fed up with her father's strict sushi training. So after a kung fu fight with her father, she quits her job and moves away from home. She finds a service job at the highly rated Karinoyo Hotel, where rude business men from a pharmaceutical company have booked a stay for a weekend. The guests are having a great time, eating sushi incorrectly, getting drunk on Sake, and groping the asses of various staff members. Things take a turn for the worst when a disgruntled former employee of the pharmaceutical company shows up and unleashes a zombified squid that flies around the hotel infecting and resurrecting various pieces of sushi which in turn attack and zombify the guests. Now Keiko must use her considerable Kung Fu skills to defend the hotel against carnivorous sushi and rice spewing zombies.

Tinto Brass' All Ladies Do It/The Key Blu-rays From Arrow Films

Arrow Video are pleased to announce the UK DVD & Worldwide Blu-ray premieres of two cornerstone releases in Erotic Cinema history, Tinto Brass'  "All Ladies Do It" and "The Key". Beautifully restored, uncut and uncensored, both films will be available as dual format editions from Monday May 20th.  
One of the true pioneers of adult and erotic cinema, Brass was born and raised in 1930’s Venice. His Grandfather, Italico Brass, was a famous painter. Tinto inherited his grandfather’s artistic talents and applied them to his future filmmaking.


Renowned as one of Europe's leading figures in softcore erotic filmmaking, Brass has earned a worldwide reputation for his blend of artiness and thematic extremity.

After joining the Italian film industry in the early 1960’s Brass worked alongside the likes of Federico Fellini (whom Tinto idolised) and Roberto Rossellini, before directing his debut solo feature in 1963.  
It was not until ‘76 that Brass would experience worldwide recognition, when Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione chose him to direct "Caligula". Despite numerous editing and post-production issues, which caused Brass to disown the film, it made millions at the box office and ultimately gained him global notoriety.  

Known for his lush but unconventional eroticism, often with political or social undertones, Brass went on to direct a string of highly acclaimed erotic features, two of which, The Key and All Ladies Do It, have been hand-picked by Arrow to receive their UK Blu-ray premieres.

These two dual format editions include brand new uncut and uncensored versions of each film, which have been painstakingly restored for Blu-ray and DVD. They also include both the Italian and English audio tracks, together for the very first time on a home entertainment release.

This verison of the film is the longest version ever released in the UK. The stunning Claudia Koll indulges her unquenchable sexual appetite in this softcore epic – loosely inspired by the Mozart opera Così fan tutte (the title is a direct translation).

Diana (Claudia Koll) and Paolo (Paolo Lanza) are happily married despite her much greater sexual appetite – he’s content to simply listen to the stories of her various adventures.  But, when she has an affair that’s much too close to home, he throws her out, and she moves into a Venetian flat to embark upon an erotic voyage of sexual discovery, while at the same time trying to win him back.

All Ladies Do It tackles a crucial question: why shouldn’t women enjoy the same sexual freedom that they’ve long had to tolerate in their men?  Especially when they have such shapely and inviting rears?
Once again, Tinto Brass proves his unmatched skill at balancing eroticism and humour in this lively and beautifully photographed comedy, both wittier and more sexually explicit than the average softcore romp. One of Brass's most critically acclaimed films, The Key is also one of his most elegant, with wintry Venetian locations, a beautiful Ennio Morricone score and a strong sense of period - it’s set in 1940, just before Mussolini’s Italy entered World War II. 

However, it also unmistakably shows the path that Brass would eventually follow, with startlingly graphic sex scenes for a supposedly ‘respectable’ film cast with serious actors.

Schizoid/X-Ray Blu-ray Coming From Scream Factory This August

"Two long-lost slasher films from the legendary Cannon Pictures roster finally see their DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of new transfers!

1980's SCHIZOID (starring Klaus Kinski, Donna Wilkes, Christopher Lloyd and lots of scissor stabbings) is paired with 1982's X-RAY (also known as HOSPITAL MASSACRE and stars Barbi Benton). If you're a fan of the mad killer sub-genre from this time period, you will definitely need this double bill for sure.

X-RAY FANS TAKE NOTE: Our presentation of X-RAY is the full 89 min version - which is what HOSPITAL MASSACRE was released on VHS in the 80s - and not the cut version that has, apparently, existed on overseas VHS copies or some cable airings. We did our homework on this one. :)"

Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Dies At 49

"SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away at about 11 a.m. today (Thursday, May 2) near his Southern California home. He was 49. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Hanneman — who in January 2011 contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since — spoke to U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine in the fall of 2011 about his recovery which has seen him sit out an entire two years' worth of touring with the band."

Son of a mother, we've been losing a lot of great people these past few months. As a huge Slayer fan, this one is especially brutal to hear. For the next two days at work I'm going to try and go through the entire Slayer catalog in chronological order from Evil Has No Boundaries to Not Of This God. Twice.

Manchester Morgue Gets Facebooked - About 5 Years Late

After running this site for like 6 years, I've finally gotten a Facebook page set up because I think I was the only person in the world with a site without a corresponding Facebook/Twitter account. Now, I think Twitter is stupid, the phrase "tweet" annoys me to no end (I feel like punching myself having even written it), and my rambling writing style wouldn't work out well with a 140 character limit, so I won't be doing that, but I think by law I have to have one or the other, so Facebook it is.
