The Horrific Art of Basil Gogos

Basil Gogos' unique art style should be instantly recognizable to pretty much any horror fan. His work has graced the cover of  dozens of issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland and many other publications, his work was practically everywhere in the 60's and 70's. Boredom took over today and while digging around for some cool horror art I came across some 2258x3000 pixel scans of original Basil Gogos art and I knew I had to share. These things were huge, I think you could print great looking full sized posters with scans that big. I shrunk them down for this post, but they still look great. Well, the posters at least, some of the magazine cover scans aren't as high quality.

Up first, Linda Blair, fully demonized complete with facial lacerations, glowing yellow eyes and disgusting green tongue for Famous Monsters issue 111.

 Next, Mr. Vinny Price from The Pit and The Pendulum for FM issue 14.

Baron Sardonicus was very pleased with Basil's work on his portrait for the cover of issue 126.

And now, my personal favorite from Eerie #30, a mummy about to become unwound while attacking a beatnik in a bathrobe. I really love the red on this one, Basil was so good he even managed to make his backgrounds beautiful. Even if you dropped the characters from the art, it would still be gallery worthy.

Two and a half minutes of man against technology in a battle to the death, with a bit of an homage to the Evil Dead tree rape, only instead of branches, this time it's reenacted with power cords and ethernet cables. The Bunny Man rumored to be the Easter Bunny is an urban legend originating from two incidents in Fairfax County Virginia in 1970, but has been spread throughout the Washington D.C. area. There are many variations to the legend, but most involve a man wearing a rabbit costume who attacks people with an axe.

Easter Sunday Movie is only loosely based on this Urban Legend. Easter Sunday is a throwback horror film in the vein of the 80's slasher genre. The writer, creator and director of this film Jeremy Morehead is a die hard horror movie fanatic who is bringing fourth his vision of 80's gore fill to the film. Douglas Fisher is the bunny masked villain in the film. Douglas is as menacing as the likes of Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees. This film will be fun, fast paced, and at times filled with edge of your seat tension. The Poster is original art by Marc Shoenbach

Kung Fu Girls on the Rampage - Retromedia Releases Wonder Women

I overlooked this the other day, new from Retromedia is Robert V. O'Neill's Wonder Women. There was at one point some conflict between Retromedia and Code Red who both announced a release of the film around the same time. No idea who had the proper rights to the film, or if Code Red still plans to put their own version out later on, but the Retromedia release is out now for those of you interested. Though sadly the piece of visual badassery seen above is not the actual DVD cover. I wasn't interested in this one at first, but then I saw this and promptly changed my mind:

The 30th Anniversary DVD put out by Code Red is still available at their store, so Bill is probably going to shit when he catches wind of the Drafthouse release, especially if it sells well. I have the Code Red release, but it's a dementedly stupid good time, I'll grab this release as well.

Shout! Plans Limited Theatrical Release for Cockneys Vs. Zombies

It was announced a couple of months ago that 2012 British zombie comedy Cockneys Vs. Zombies would be released as a future Scream Factory title. I'm not sure when it'll be hitting Blu-ray, or if they're keeping it on the Scream line, but it looks like they've decided to go ahead and do a limited theatrical run starting August 2.

I actually caught Cockneys Vs. Zombies about 6 months ago. I found it to be quite enjoyable, cool zombies, good humor for the most part, and for the perverts out there Michelle Ryan in a tank top. In addition to Michelle there are several other solid cast members; Honor Blackman (Pussy Galore herself), Alan Ford and Harry Treadaway just to name a few. Cockneys was directed by Matthias Hoene and written by James Moran who also wrote Tower Block which is out from Shout! July 2nd.

The Howling & Lifeforce Overseas Poster Madness

In honor of The Howling and Lifeforce Blu-rays finally being released today, I thought I'd do a quick post of some of my favorite gonzo foreign posters from each film. Up first, The Howling. One from France, the second from Germany, and a pair of awesomely gaudy posters from Japan - a country frequently referred to as the "awesomely gaudy poster capital of the world".

For such a weird ass movie Lifeforce doesn't really have too many off the wall posters that I could find. Both of the ones I've posted come from Japan. This first one is quite excellent; good layout excluding the red characters on the top left, nice use of color - the purple plays really well off of the black and blue of space. The second poster takes the space shuttle/space vampire image and then really "Japans" the hell out of it, they just went through some stills and cut and pasted several spoileriffic images all over the place, seemingly at random.

Finally, a Kickstarter campaign I can really get behind:

"Okay, horror fans! I’m Kevin Tenney. I directed the original Night Of The Demons and it became a cult classic, spawning two successful sequels. A few years ago, Adam Gierasch (Autopsy, Toolbox Murders) remade my original Night Of The Demons and the response was overwhelming. Ever since, fans have constantly asked me, “When are you going to make another Demons film?” And here’s my answer: "It’s up to all of you."

We’ve put together an impressive . . . I mean REALLY impressive . . . crew and a kick ass script—Night Of The Demons: After-Party. It’s Halloween and we’re in a cemetery, having a party. Suddenly, there are demons and zombies everywhere, and all hell breaks loose! Literally!

I actually quite enjoyed the remake so I'll throw a bit of money in for this. Sure the remake wasn't quite as fun as Night of the Demons or Night of the Demons 2, but it was certainly way better than Night of the Demons 3.

Producer Kevin Tenney has assembled an impressive crew for this sequel, Anthony Hickox is set to direct, and Gabe Bartalos (Basket Case 2 & 3) is on effects duty. Scoring NOTD: After Party will be none other than the legendary Harry Manfredini. I have to say, based on those three names alone, I'm in.

There are actually some rather interesting rewards for contributors. For a $350 pledge you can get your name on one of the tombstones shown in the film, and they send you the actual tombstone when the film is done. It's probably the most unique reward I've seen on one of these Kickstarters, you help get the film get made and you get an excellent Halloween prop to use for the next 50 years.

Jack Hill's cult favorite Spider Baby makes it's Blu-ray debut today (roughly 49 years after being filmed) thanks to UK based label Arrow Video. Originally shot over a 7 day period in the summer of 1964, the film was shelved until 1968 when it finally saw a limited release. This "maddest story ever told" tells us of the Merrye siblings, Ralph (Sid Haig), Elizabeth (Beverly Washburn) and Virginia (Jill Banner), a group of adults who, as a result of inbreeding suffer from an ailment exclusive to their family called Merrye Syndrome. The syndrome causes their brain function to regress as their bodies age. So while they are fully grown adults in appearance, Merrye Syndrome causes them to act and think like a bunch of mentally retarded 4 year olds, albeit, some particularly dangerous and sinister mentally retarded 4 year olds. Ralph is a sexually aggressive bald mute giant that likes to kill cats. Virginia, the "Spider Baby" of the title is obsessed with spiders, she keeps them as pets, she even eats them. She also likes to play a game called "Spider" where she traps people in her web and stings them, and by this I mean she likes to throw a net on someone and then rapidly stab them in the face. At first glance Elizabeth seems to be the most together of the three, though she won't hesitate to kill a man with a Hitler mustache with a pitchfork if she feels threatened.

Arrow Video's latest Arrowdrome release is The Vineyard, the 1989 film directed by James Hong, the world's most prolific character actor. 

Eccentric winemaker Dr. Elson Po (James Hong) invites several actors to his island home under the guise of a movie audition. Here's the thing, there's no movie, and Po is a deranged lunatic who plans to chain all of the actors up in a dungeon and harvest their blood for nefarious purposes. You see, Dr. Po is actually a couple of centuries old, and he maintains his middle agedness with a cocktail of human blood and shavings from an ancient green amulet he wears around his neck. If he goes too long without his plasma elixir he ages hundreds of years in under a minute and shrivels up like a freeze dried mummy.
