Beetlejuice - The Complete Animated Series

Arriving on DVD May 28th, 2013 from Shout! Factory. 2,160 minutes, a full day and a half of family friendly goth-toons. I know I used to watch this as a kid sometimes, but I literally only remember one part from this entire series. Someone forcing Beetlejuice to say the phrase "I'm coming apart at the seems", followed by Beet actually falling apart at the seems. That's it, 36 hours of cartoon, I remember 10 seconds of it. I hope Cartoon Beetlejuice fans aren't opposed to Amazon, because this set is an Amazon Exclusive.

I'll pass on this release myself (too many unwatched Hanna Barbara cartoon sets in my collection) but I have to say these Shout! guys are kicking a gargantuan amount of ass with all of these TV series sets. I never thought I'd own complete sets of the Norm Show and Get A Life. And lets not forget their work on the Mystery Science Theater sets.

Frankenhooker - Now A Major Motion Picture Review

I'm trying to start doing a lot more movie reviews here, focus less on music since it's become a bit of a pain lately keeping track of everything.

Jeffrey Franken - full-time mook and electric company worker, part-time mad scientist and inventor. Elizabeth Shelley - Jeff's "portly" girlfriend, occupation...not mentioned. Referred to as fat numerous times, despite not being fat.

Like Wayne Szalinski in Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Jeff has created a remote control lawn mower as a gift for Elizabeth's father. Unlike Wayne, Jeff's lawn mower kinda, sorta runs over and dismembers his overweight girlfriend. However, despite being chunked to death by a bitchin' remote control lawn mower*, Elizabeth's head remains completely un-mangled. Jeff is able to procure her unscathed cranium without police knowing about it. If he can find a female body without a head, he should be in business.

So after a montage of Jeff making a Frankenhooker blueprint while muttering to himself he heads into an even seedier looking than usual 1990's Jersey City. With a wad of money and the help of a body-building pimp named Zorro Jeff is able to spend an hour with several of Zorro's best girls (I'd hate to see this guy's worst girls). Jeff's plan is to find the girl whose body has the least amount of gross moles and cigarette burns, kidnap her, lop her head off, screw Elizabeth's on and zap her ass back to life.

On his venture to the city Jeff has brought with him another of his creations, a super powered form of crack called...Super Crack. A crack so super it makes things explode. This guy only seems to invent terrifying, terrifying things. If there is such a thing as an inventing license, this man's should be revoke at once. Upon discovering the Super Crack in Jeff's bag, the ladies of the night go bananas, kick Jeff's ass and smoke up. 30 seconds later, in a hysterical scene that rivals the peeping scene from Animal House, the hookers all go tits up and explode. Of course, since the budget is on the low side, the exploding bodies are represented by various mannequin body parts which are sent flying around the room. A leg destroys a lamp, a butt cheek bounces off the walls, a flying head knocks Zorro unconscious.

So instead of one dead hooker body, Jeff ends up with bags full of parts. (Except torsos, where the hell does he end up getting a torso?) After sorting through the parts and picking out the most symmetrical knockers and filing bunions off of the least smelly feet Jeffrey sews a body together, slaps an Elizabeth head on this strewn together monstrosity, and success! Resurrection!

For some reason, despite having her own brain, Liz promptly adopts some very hooker-like mannerisms. She immediately knocks Jeff out, heads to the city and starts aggressively offering up dates to short, fat business men. Jeff must track her down before she can commit any sex murders.

Not Frank Henenlotter's best, but I adore this movie. James Lorinz's deadpan performance as Jeffrey really makes the movie for me. As good as he is, I also have to give Patty Mullen credit, her performance as Frankenhooker is great as well. This chick makes some of the goofiest faces you will ever see. I'm talking beyond Jim Carrey in Rubberface goofy, it's amazing. Despite what you would assume, this really isn't a very gory movie. Sure there are body parts everywhere but not much blood and guts, I actually consider this movie to be almost a romantic comedy. Make sure your date has a weird sense of humor first though.

I have been a fan of this movie since the early 90's, staying up late watching movies I wasn't old enough to be watching so I guess I have a bit of nostalgia for the movie, so I might be over-hyping it a bit. So first time viewers may need to lower their expectations but fans of stuff like Bride of Re-Animator, or any of Henenlotter's stuff, I think you'll find something to enjoy here.
 
I highly recommend the Synapse blu-ray.The transfer is stunning, and in addition, it's pretty loaded with features...

Hilarious Album Cover of the Week

I've been known to frequent thrift stores for some time now. I work outdoors most of the time, so I like being able to get some pretty decent shirts for $1-$3 so I'm not spending actual money on clothes that I'll destroy at work. Every time I visit a thrift store I always make a point to look through the old records. I don't even own a turntable, yet I am compelled to flip through every single record because occasionally you find an album with a cover like this:

A cover that makes you say "What?!" out loud a little louder than you mean to, so that the people looking at the books right next to the records to stare at you for a moment before slowly backing away from the books. I can't be the only one who thinks this cover is creepy and bizarre, can I? A huge naked man, holding out a small naked like he's presenting it to a raffle winner at some kind of weird nudist swap meet. Seems odd to me. And where is his where is this guy's left thumb?

Anyway, I didn't buy the album, even though it was only a dollar. I went during my lunch break and I didn't think leaving a record in my hot ass car for a few hours would be a good idea. That, and the lack of a turntable.

But, I remembered when I got home, and I searched around and found it online. Apparently Slave was a pretty popular funk/disco/soul outfit active in Dayton, Ohio from 1977 up until 1996. I haven't heard their other stuff, but, despite the awkward album cover Just a Touch of Love is actually a pretty decent album. 

Here's a thrift store record question, what's the deal with the records where the original owner felt the need to write their name in ball point pen on the album sleeve? Was there a rash of record theft in the 70's? Were people breaking into houses and stealing Dolly Parton and Speedwagon records and was writing your name on the records an effective theft deterrent?

Double Dragon - Last Caress (Gore Glam)

This is Double Dragon's music from Last Caress (or Glam Gore, if you prefer), a Giallo homage from France. I'd give the movie a rating of "ehh" out of 10. Not great, but it didn't make me want to off myself or anything. Decent enough on the gore front, but the killer looked like a British gangster and kinda seemed out of place and the Vaseline lensed soft porn look of the movie actually kind of started hurting my eyes by the end. Maybe worth a look for Giallo lovers, but pretty hard to find and probably not really worth the effort.

The soundtrack on the other hand - 10 Stars! I love the music to this, it's just really quite awesome. Kind of a really synthy Goblin feel I think. Definitely one of my favorite musical discoveries of the past year. I believe this was only available with the limited edition (of 2000) DVD. Someone please release this album officially so I can give these Double Dragon guys some of my money.



I can't seem to find a tracklist for some reason, but there are 20 tracks, the standout for me is track 7. When listening to this album start with that one, and end with that one.

Anthropophagic Cookbook - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

I haven't done a compilation on here in a while, so here's my latest. Actually, I did this one quite a while ago but for some reason I keep forgetting to post it. I call it Anthropophagic Cookbook. As far as I know, there are no audio cookbooks - even fewer dealing with the art of preparing human flesh for culinary purposes, so I know the title doesn't really make any sense. But like with all my compilations, logic is irrelevant if I think the title is funny. This has has a bit more specific of a theme than usual. Anthro Cookbook is filled with music about cannibalism. It's half scores from cannibalriffic films like Cannibal Holocaust or Ravenous, and half songs about cannibals, or cannibalizing, or learning to count using cannibals (that'll make sense after you listen to it).

I've tried to avoid just filling this with metal songs. I could've knocked this compilation out in about 14 minutes just by going through a couple Cannibal Corpse and Avulsed albums. I wanted a bit more of a challenge than that. There are a few metal songs from Blood Duster, Macabre and the mighty Exodus, but I think I've got a pretty good variety of other stuff to keep things interesting.

The image for the cover was taken from an old VHS cover from the truly horrible film Microwave Massacre. I remember seeing this cover in a video store when I was about 9 and it scared the hell out of me. For years I was afraid to watch it, completely unaware that it's actually a really low brow, low rent wacky horror comedy. What's funny is I think we actually rented Robocop that night, which is astonishingly violent and gruesome. Moreso than probably a hundred Microwave Massacres. Still, that image is pretty disturbing. Though I do wonder why he's cooking the lady's head with the hair still on, he'll never get that smell out of the microwave.

Looks like a bummer, much like the original. I'll probably see this. I love Elijah in Wilfred, and he made for a good creepy bastard in Sin City so this might work. Weird sound effect choice during the first murder they show, sounds like she's being killed with Flubber.

Manchester Morgue and the Jack L. Samuelson Orchestra Present Swinging Sounds of Christmas - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

I kinda regret not getting a Halloween compilation together this year so I wanted to make sure I get a Christmas one done. As you can see I decided to go against my usual dark and gruesome compilation art choices and chose a pervy old Playboy painting instead. I also toned down the ridiculousness of the title (and in turn made it by far the longest title ever) to try and make it match the old compilation records they used to make so many of. Bert Kaempfert had a thousand of these things. I see at least a dozen of his every time I go to the thrift store.

As with all my compilations, I don't have a planned out order in which these songs should be listened to, I just listed them alphabetically because that's how they were in the folder. Lor Crane - Haunted

This is the soundtrack from the 1977 film Haunted, not to be confused with the 1995 Kate Beckinsale film or a similarly titled film also from 1977 called Haunts, which is what I first thought it was when Code Red released the DVD this year. I actually haven't seen this one yet - though I would've checked it out the DVD immediately had it been Haunts that was released - a Cameron Mitchell film from the guy who did Graduation Day? Sold!

Anyway, moving on to the film this music actually comes from. Like I mentioned, I've never seen this one, but the tagline "It Began the Day They Installed That Telephone Booth in the Cemetery!" amuses me greatly so I might have to check it soon. Plus, the first song has vocals by Billy Vera and as a fan of King of Queens and it's hilariously cheesy theme song about weary eyes and tight backs that automatically makes this movie at least a little awesome.

Redneck Zombies - Filmed in Entrail-Vision!

Continuing with my current rigorous 1 post every 2 1/2 months schedule, here's the soundtrack from the 1989 Rednexploitation classic (is that a thing?) Redneck Zombies. This comes from the "Tromasterpiece Collection" DVD, which for those you you not averse to stepping into a Wal-Mart can actually find this 2-disc DVD in the $5 bin. It's like $18 on Amazon right now. I had just about finished searching through the hellish nightmare that is the DVD dump bin, when directly in front of me, literally on the bottom of the bin was a copy waiting for me to take it home. Finally, a dump bin victory. I check that thing every time I'm there, I don't think I've ever bought something from there. Although I was tempted by a Different World box set once.

Of course when I go to check out, the suspiciously attractive girl who works at my Wal-Mart rings me up. Normally, that's cool, because she's hot, and who doesn't like having to talk to someone who is hot? But this time I had a kind of creepy combination of items in my cart. Lotion (not for that), a hand mirror (it's amazingly hard to see the back of your head when you cut your own hair) and a DVD copy of Redneck Zombies, complete with extremely gross back cover. That's it. Should've also bought some groceries or a plant or something.

I've actually only seen half of Redneck Zombies, way back in 199...9, I think. I started it, had to go to work halfway through. I did not return to the movie. I recall I kind of hated it, but I'm going to give it another shot in the next few days. Maybe 12 years will change my opinion. Plus I had to buy it because I think it's funny seeing a Troma movie at Wal-Mart. I remember not that long ago Wal-Mart was a store that used to not carry music with explicit lyrics. Now you can go in and buy movies filled with extreme gore and ultraviolence like Hobo With A Shotgun and Redneck Zombies.

Paul Zaza - Curtains

In my long stretch of non-posting, something pretty awesome turned up on The Terror Trap. Hidden in a 2 page Paul Zaza interview is the complete soundtrack from the 1983 Canadian classic Curtains. It can be found on the right side here. It's only streaming audio, but that can be easily saved if you've got IDM, or any other streaming audio downloading program.

Curtains, which I actually watched for the first time today, is a pretty great slasher featuring John Vernon and Lynne Griffin. As a massive fan of both Strange Brew and Black Christmas I got a tremendous kick out of seeing Lynne here. Despite Curtains having some great stalking/death sequences and very solid acting and some nice twists along the way it's one of the few remaining quality early 80s slashers that's missing even a decent DVD release. It has been put out on DVD but apparently with a VHS transfer along with 3 shit recent movies nobody has ever heard of on a DVD set called The Midnight Horror Collection: Bloody Slashers. I've heard people have found that DVD at Wal-Mart in the dreaded $5 bin, but not me. I can't look through that thing for more than 2 minutes before I've knocked 4 copies of Howard the Duck on the floor or having some dude wander over and start throwing titles I've already looked at back to my side of the bin. It's a nightmare, and hardly worth the effort. Now if Synapse could go ahead and put this bastard out on a nicely loaded Blu-ray like The Dorm That Dripped Blood, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ultraman Jazz

This is the very out of print Ultraman Jazz. This is kind of like Ultraman meets...uh... the opening theme from The Cosby Show? Sorry, I don't listen to jazz, that's the best jazz reference you're getting from me. There's an even out of printer Vol. 2 out there, if I can find it I'll post it here.

Someone recommended I post some Kaiju soundtracks, so I'll dig some out from the vaults and get them up soon. Good timing actually, I need to familiarize myself with some of the classic Kaiju themes so I can rework them with my giant monster themed new wave band Kaijugoogoo.

I thought some of you guys might not have seen this yet and might get a kick out of it. It starts as a cute Let's All Go To The Lobby style ad, but around 1:28 into it the JujyFruit gets iced and everything goes batshit and gets real terrifying like. Kind of like the end of Brazil and Mulholland Drive, only it's a cartoon with anthropomorphic hot dogs and popcorn and shit.

Hobo With A Shotgun Invading Your Home Today!

I thought I'd remind everyone that Jason Eisener's Hobo With A Shotgun was released for purchasing and owning today. Checking around a lot of people love this thing, but a lot of people seem to really hate it. I'm not seeing any middle ground for this one. No one seems to think it was just alright. Me, I loved it. I've seen it 3 times now and it keeps getting funnier every time I see it. Rutger Hauer just kills it in this movie and I'm pretty sure I'm in love with Molly Dunsworth.

Not only is the movie totally bananas, the blu-ray and DVD are filled with highly watchable features. I don't spend much time with extra features usually, but I've had my blu-ray going for about 4 hours now and there's still a ton of stuff to get through. The making of documentary is a beauty. Watching the director of a movie holding a camera, hanging off the back of a moving pickup while another guy holds him by the back of his shirt is one of the best things I've ever seen. Not just in a documentary, I mean ever.

The tremendously loaded Blu-ray and 2-disc DVD are actually on sale this week at Best Buy for $17.99, and if you take a moment to print this coupon, out you can have it for $13. It's certainly not a movie everyone is going to love, but at this price immediately after its release I highly recommend a purchase. I have no affiliation with Hobo or with Best Buy, just wanting to save some potential Hobo purchasers some money.

Side note: Hobo With A Shotgun has made me realize my next car has to be a Bricklin. Sure the car is considered to be one of the worst ever made, but how fucking cool are these things:

Graham Collins - Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace

Way back when I first started this site I shared the soundtrack from Canuxploitation flick Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter - which is still available to download, by the way. Today, I bring you Graham Collins equally excellent music from Lee Demarbre's 2004 film Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace. As far as I know this hasn't been released and I don't think it's been shared anywhere before.

I obtained this soundtrack the same way as the guys who got the Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter soundtrack, I contacted Odessa Filmworks about the availability of a soundtrack, and a few days later JC Vampire Hunter/Harry Knuckles director Lee Demarbre was awesome enough to send me the soundtrack. He told me to enjoy it, and share it, so here we go.

I don't have time to type out the tracklist right now, but there's 32 tracks and the file is about 170MB.

Smells like fish, tastes like PAIN!

Harry Knuckles and the Pearl Necklace is actually currently on Netflix streaming if you haven't seen it. It's a must see for any fans of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, or anyone who likes weird ass martial arts comedies featuring Amazonian assassins and a bionic bigfoot.

And here's the remaining issues of Skywald's Psycho series. This includes issues 18-24, plus a 1972 Annual issue and a 1974 Yearbook issue. Psycho #24 was actually the final issue of anything Skywald published, they shut down shortly after that issue was put out in March, 1975.
