D.C. Cab

I hope everyone out there had a nice Easter. At least those of you who, unlike me, don't have crappy jobs where you had to work on Easter. Today I give you the music from the 1983 film D.C. Cab. Directed by Joel "Ice to see you!" Schumacher, D.C. Cab stars Adam "John Casey" Baldwin and Lawrence "They Call Me Mr. T" Tureaud. It also stars Bill Maher, a man I've always wanted to perform a noogie on while simultaneously giving him a wedgie. He's actually not bad in this, but he's got this nearly Dennis Miller level of pomposity normally... not a good quality.

I had never seen this movie until about a month ago. One of my recent Big Lots scores, I gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loud, stupid, and most importantly tremendously entertaining. As a big fan of the NBC show Chuck (which is on the brink of cancellation - for the love of me, everybody watch it so it gets a third season!) I got a kick out of seeing the usually badass Adam Baldwin play such a goofy, bumpkin of a character.

Robot Fisticuffs - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

Here's my latest compilation, I call it Robot Fisticuffs. The theme for this one is "bands who share a name with a movie". Not every band here was actually directly influenced by the movie which they share a name with (some of the movies even came out after the band was created). Some of these just happen to be coincidental.

The cover comes from the May 1969 issue of Magnus Robot Fighter, 4000 A.D. I realize I'm coming off as kind of a one trick pony with my "old comic art, wacky title that has little to do with anything" cover designing formula, but until I actually attend any kind of design class, I'm having fun with the formula. Besides, it's just a little compilation that I had fun, uh, compiling, so I don't think anyone out there will be too worried. I've got a whole stack of old comics from when I helped a friends parents clean out their basement, so there are plenty more wacky covered compilations to come.

Meet The Applegates

This is Meet The Applegates. The 1991 Michael Lehmann film, starring Ed Begley Jr., Stockard Channing, and Dabney Coleman. The Applegates was even scored by our very own David Newman.

The setup:
"In the South American jungle a species of giant cocorada insects find a Dick and Jane book dropped by fleeing teachers. Not long after, a group of cocoradas, camouflaging themselves as an ordinary human family, set up house in a suburban neighbourhood with the intention of sabotaging a nuclear power plant and bringing down civilization so that they can have the planet to themselves. However the temptations of Western civilization prove to be too much for them – the father has an affair with his secretary, the mother becomes addicted to credit card shopping, the daughter becomes a militant feminist and the son a stoner."

This was Lehmann's followup to Heathers. While not nearly as popular, or as memorable as Heathers, Applegates is still quite an entertaining film, and its current "Out of Print in any format, anywhere in the world" status is a bit baffling.

Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By

Upon hearing the news that Faith No More was planning on reuniting I found a list of some of Mike Patton's other projects. I was familiar with most of it - Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom and Mike's solo stuff, but one I had never heard of was something called Lovage - a collaborative effort between Dan Nakamura, Mike Patton, Jennifer Charles and Kid Koala.

Mike Patton has an absolutely incredible voice, but I much prefer to hear the man sing instead of doing his more deranged solo/Fantomas stuff. I totally respect the man as an artist and everything, but I just can not get into this type of stuff. Luckily Lovage is a very cool, laid back trip-hop/lounge outfit which lets Mike's (and Jennifer's) tremendous singing voice shine. If you like your Mike Patton a little poppier (like Peeping Tom) I would give this a shot.

This album is quite out of print and is fetching upwards of $100 on Amazon, so I am posting this here for anyone having trouble finding it. Or people like myself who somehow never heard of it before now.

Walter Werzowa - Hellraiser: Inferno

Hellraiser Inferno. I listed this as my least favorite Hellraiser in the last post, but I honestly don't remember too much about it. I just know I didn't like it when I saw it. Of course, I haven't really seen any of the Hellraiser movies in at least a year and a half (8 years for Inferno) so I probably need to see them all again to get a more up to date opinion on the series.

It may not be obvious from looking at the two, but Kid in the Hall Bruce McCulloch has the ability to look quite similar to Inferno star Craig Sheffer. But shorter. And Canadian-er.

The Thing With No Heads! - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

Here is another compilation I just finished working on. This is a follow-up to my Novelty Cigarette Lighter of Doom and Werewolf in Unnecessarily Short Gym Shorts compilations. These are all songs that share a title with a movie. Most of these don't actually have anything to do with the movie they share a title with, but I don't think anyone is really too worried about that.

As you'll see, this is a rather eclectic assortment of music, from Horror Punk, to Swedish Pop to Death Metal to whatever the hell you'd call the music The Tear Garden perform, with a bit of Horror Surf thrown in for good measure. It's mixed up enough to where everyone should find something they like and something they hate. But hopefully it'll be a fun compilation to check out.

Here are some notes on a few of the song/movie title choices:

The Goblins - These guys have nothing to do with Goblin (who I believe I've seen listed as The Goblins on a movie before). These guys are kind of a loving tribute to The Misfits, but not quite. Kind of a Spinal Tap of horror punk, maybe? This guy right here seems to know the whole story. I put two of their songs on here because one of them was only 41 seconds long.

ABBA - I've Been Waiting For You - This was a TV movie from 1998 starring Ben Foster, Punky Brewster and Hot Becky.

The Butthole Surfers - Dust Devil - An ode to Lucifer, turkey and vacuums. I had to edit this one down, it's like 8 minutes long and over 5 of those minutes are just really noisy guitar freak-out wankery.

Lars Anderson - Hellraiser: Hellworld

Hellraiser: Hellworld, the 8th(!) chapter in the Hellraiser series. A pretty mediocre entry overall, there is one good reason to check this one out and it's not Pinhead's ever so slightly expanding belly (sorry Doug, I kid, I kid). That reason? Underrated Canadian beauty Katheryn Winnick, an actress who I've enjoyed seeing since I caught her in the fairly dreadful (in my opinion) Jeff Lieberman film Satan's Little Helper. Most recently she was in a horror film called Amusement, which while well shot, just wasn't particularly good. The villian's name is The Laugh, I mean really, what the fuck is that?

Aside from being ridiculously attractive she's also got pretty decent acting chops (she was on House - that's a thing, right?), she's a licensed body guard and she can kick your ass Tae Kwon Do style if she were so inclined. She'll be starring in the new Paul Giamatti/Emily Watson film Cold Souls, so maybe that'll get her a little more exposure.

Anyway, back to Lars' music. This looks to be the highest profile film he's worked on, but the music is quite well done. It's effectively moody and eerie, while never veering into cheesy territory. I think it's pretty excellent actually, check it out.

Joe Hisaishi - Robot Carnival

This is the music from the 1987 anime film Robot Carnival - known to the Japanese as Robotto kânibaru. Masahisa Takeichi, Isaku Fujita, and Jô Hisaishi are all listed as composers on Soundtrack Collector.

I actually once found a copy of this at my favorite pawn shop (a thing greatly lacking in the area I've moved to) for $2. I don't have it anymore because someone offered me $50 for it, and as a perpetually unrich individual, it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

Kolobos vs. Suspiria

This was supposed to go on my next compilation, but I only have a handful of tracks lined up for a new compilation, so here goes. When watching the 1999 film Kolobos, I couldn't help but notice the theme's striking similarity to Goblin's theme from Suspiria. This isn't just kind of close, this is like lawsuity similar. I assume, given Kolobos Argento-ian touches that pop up from time to time, that this was probably meant to be more homage than rip off. Have a listensee:

This is blasphemy I realize, but I kinda like the Kolobos one a bit better. One reason, that sound in Suspiria that sounds like they recorded Marangolo while he was tuning a drum. Really, really slowly. You know what I'm talking about. Drives me nuts. Suspiria is the better picture, hands down, but I've gotta give the edge to Kolobos' theme, even though they pretty much stole the entire thing from Goblin.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Episode 306 - Time of the Apes

This is episode 306 of Mystery Science Theater, a sort of Japanese Planet of the Apes called Time of the Apes. Time of the Apes was one of 10 Sandy Frank distributed films that appeared on the show throughout the first 3 seasons. Sandy (for the 9 MST fans who don't know) was well known for taking Japanese movies like Gamera or Fugitive Alien, dubbing them into English and unleashing them on American audiences. This is one of those films. Well, technically Time of the Apes wasn't even really a film before Frank got his hands on it. It was actually edited together using several episodes of the 1974 Planet of the Apes inspired Japanese show Esuefu dorama saru no gundan(Army of the Apes). Kind of like Episode K10, Cosmic Princess, which was comprised of two episodes of Space 1999. Only with more Japanese people poorly dubbed into English and given American names.

I haven't made a cover for this one because I can't find one bit of decent looking artwork, or any good screenshots. I've actually started one using a Japanese Planet of the Apes poster, but I don't know if I'll finish it. I'll continue to try and find an image to work with, but until then you can check out Joshway's site and grab a very classy and stylish cover, like the one below.

Midnight Tales - Approved By The Comics Code Authority!

Silent Madness

The 1984 film Silent Madness. Like Fatal Games this is another fairly obscure slasher film that I rather enjoyed. Cute girls in aerobic get ups, a deranged bald mama's boy, a crotchety old sheriff who for some reason reminds me of Zelda Rubinstein, a Dragon's Lair arcade game...sure it's not a "good" movie per se, but semi-obscure slasher fans should definitely get a kick out of it. Even if you hate it, the heckling potential is pretty high if you're a sarcastic bastard like myself.

Directed by one Simon Nutchern, one of 4 people credited as director of the infamous Snuff from 1976. The Findlays (Roberta and Michael) and (Swedish Spaniard?) Horacio Fredriksson being the other 3 who may or may not have at some point or another possibly had a hand in directing some part of the movie.

Moving On. Madness was actually filmed in 3-D. I didn't notice much in the way of "aiming things toward the camera" gags, but the poster I've seen says 3-D, so I've gotta believe the poster. Sadly the one I'm posting isn't in 3-D, but it's still worth a watch. Who knows though, 3-D seems to be pretty popular at the moment, maybe a 3-D DVD is just around the corner. Just look at the 3-D happenings of late:

• The amazingly entertaining My Bloody Valentine 3-D
• 3-D commercials during the Super Bowl on February 1st, followed by a 3-D episode of Chuck on the 2nd. Get your glasses here. (Chuck, by the way, is a fantastic show that I can't recommend enough. Watch it!)
• Friday the 13th III on DVD again but actually in 3-D this time.
• An Alexandre Aja helmed remake of Piranha, announced in 3-D
• The Stewardesses, on DVD (this Tuesday actually). Yep, in 3-D
• For the kids Bolt from a few months ago and the upcoming Monsters Vs. Aliens

As you can see, it's a good time for 3D movies to be put out, maybe Silent Madness has at least a slight chance.

Creatures of the Night - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

Here is the second volume of covers, I call it Creatures of the Night. This one is pretty much entirely metal bands doing the covers, save for the Deftones track. They're not very metal. I think that this is the better compilation of the two, hopefully everyone will find something they enjoy.

This cover was from the sixth issue of Vampirella. I love the artwork, but I'm not entirely happy with my small contributions to the cover. I might try and fix it up but I don't know if I'll have time.

I Got Erection - A Manchester Morgue Compilation

Here is my newest compilation, the first volume in a two volume (for now) collection of some of my favorite cover songs. I call it I Got Erection - named after a Turbonegro song covered by Satyricon, which is featured in this compilation. I've shortened the RAR name to IGE for anyone here whose wife might be pissed finding a file with Erection in the name.

For the most part these are metal bands doing covers of other hard rock or metal songs (it is still my music of choice, after all) but there are a few rather interesting covers here. Sonata Artica's cover of a Bette Midler Beaches classic, Surf band Gein and the Graverobbers' cover of Iron Maiden's Transylvania, or Children of Bodom's hilarious rendition of Kenny Rogers' Just Dropped In should at least elicit a smile from even the most smug of music fans.

The cover was done using both a Creepy cover (the down-syndrome Lon Chaney Dracula cover) and the moon from a poster for the movie Black Sheep. The vamp's head was actually in the Creepy logo, so I had to get him out of there and improvise on a background. This actually ended up being way more of a pain that I thought as it took forever to find something that actually looked okay behind him. Then there ended up being a lot of wasted space at the top, so I added the Stereotape logo to take care of that.

Get Erection

Sonata Artica - The Wind Beneath My Wings. While the idea of a power metal band covering Bette is pretty hilarious, what's odd is that this song really songs like it could've been written by and for a power metal band. Not unlike the Helloween song.

In Flames - Land of Confusion. This is a pretty decent cover, but I'd really have liked to hear Soilwork give it a go. Their singer has a considerably better, and less Jonathan Davis-like singing voice.

Galnaryus - Go. An Asian band doing a cover of a song by an English band called Asia.

Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name. The second Maiden cover on this compilation. A lot of people speak harshly of COF. While I'm no huge fan of their more recent output, I'd still consider myself a fan of them overall and I think this cover is pretty outstanding. The vocals could very well ruin it for a lot of people, but the musicianship is top notch in my opinion.

Spun - The Official Unofficial Soundtrack Custom Cover

For some unknown reason Jonas Åkerlund's 2002 film Spun never received an official soundtrack release. Not unlike the film itself, the soundtrack is absolutely chaotic, featuring everything from Zwan (who are called Djali Zwan now?) to Donovan to Satyricon. It even includes a track by Jason Schwartzman's former band Phantom Planet.

Macabre Movie Poster Madness - The Hammer Edition

Today, I thought we'd take a look a some Hammer posters. This set is a little one-sided, 80% Dracula, 20% Frank. Rasputin and The Reptile will just have to wait.

Dracula Has Risen From The Grave - This poster is way to cutesy and makes it seem like a wacky comedy - it would've been a great Love At First Bite poster - but something about this poster intrigues me. I think it's the pink band-aids. Yeah, that'll work.

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell - The top half of this image was featured on my site's most popular banner. In fact, posting this one makes me kinda miss that banner. I lost the original file when I made the old blogger to new blogger transition, but I think I might have to do it over.

The Satanic Rites of Dracula - This stunning Japanese (see, told you they were good) poster would have to be in my top 5 favorite pieces of Hammer artwork. I hope everyone is enjoying the new year so far. Things have been okay for me this first week. But I have had two sad losses so far. 1) Taco Bell is no longer making the Volcano Taco. Just as soon as they'd introduced this delightful red-shelled monstrosity to me they've taken it away. This not 3 months after I discover my favorite chips of all time - Fiery Habanero Doritos - have been taken off the market due to poor sales. It's a bad time to be a fan of hot.

2)My Zune has officially bitten the dust. I got a refurbished first generation model on Woot.com for $80. I loved the big bulky brown bastard. I even stuck up for it when people asked "what the hell is that thing, some kind of wallet?" But I'm looking at it right now, completely in pieces after an ill-advised attempt to repair it myself. I knew it was totally dead before I actually opened it up. Otherwise I wouldn't have actually done it. I tried the "open it up, look for something that came uplugged" approach. If it works with my car, why not my Zune? Oh well, I got 15 months out of it, not bad for a refurbished, out of date MP3 player.

As you might've noticed with the semi-frequent posting, I'm trying to get this site up and running properly again. I'm trying to post more, and different kind of stuff to keep the site interesting. I've even got a few little projects for the site I'm working on:
A Double Feature cover song compilation
A New Werewolf compilation (bands who play songs named after movie titles)
An attempt at a Podcast (Idea swiped from Cosmobells) -

The first two things should've been done some time ago, but I'm a slacker, so they are still in the "being worked on" phase. The Podcast, not going too well. I've gotten like 30 minutes, but I'm not happy with it. I like the song choices, not too obvious, but not pretentiously obscure. But it's just not going together too well. I don't know if I'll actually finish this thing up.

Macabre Movie Poster Madness - American Horror: Japanese Style

I think my favorite country for movie posters just might be Japan. I like posters that are a bit out of the ordinary and Japan can tend to get really out there with their designs. I especially like what they were doing with American horror films in the 70s and 80s. A lot of the time the posters are like very chaotic collages - movie stills, art from other posters for the film, and Japanese characters splattered seemingly randomly around. It's fascinating really, I could look at them for hours.

The Evil Dead. This poster damn near out-kitsches Army of Darkness' Japanese poster. Not nearly as cool as the one for AOD (and really, what could be?), but this thing is still absolutely bananas.

Now a hysterical poster from John Carpenter's Halloween. At first glance, this poster is fairly kick ass. It's simplistic, but very moody and sinister at the same time. But wait! Take a look a Mikey's face. Whoops! I like to imagine this guy was just really blitzed while he was painting this at the last minute, desperate to make a deadline and he just accidentally went a little too "bulgey-eyed puppet man" with his depiction of Michael Myers.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The collage-like design really works quite well here. Like a page from some demented scrapbook that might've been kept on the premises of the Sawyer compound. What all the Japanese stuff would be doing on there, I do not know, but you see what I'm saying.

Re-Animator - A masterful classic, brimming with severed head eroticism. Gotta love the blood splatter to hide Barbara's business. I don't know if that's supposed to be funny, but....

Carrie - I've got no comment on this one, but I figured the post would look odd without something other than the title here.
